USA a Goliath arrogant and bellicose without a David to Challenge.

The Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, when he spoke all the men of Israel, fled him, and were sore afraid  (First Book of Samuel Chapter 17).

The Goliath of to-day-the USA when it speaks all flee in fear daring not to challenge. The Goliath of to-day violates human rights, commits war crimes, kills civilians with impunity as no one dares accuse him or present resolutions against him.  But he accuses small countries like Sri Lanka which has not committed any thing that can be called “  wrong”. But Goliath nevertheless accuses  Sri Lanka, as he – Goliath, can get any one to give false evidence  against Sri Lanka, which no one will be allowed to doubt. So, every one stands in fear accepting whatever he-the Goliath –the USA, says.

Let us see briefly  just a few  out of so many glaring cases of  vicious  unchallenged crimes  USA- the Goliath has committed, and how it escapes from being accused for them by the countries of the world who are forced to shut their eyes and clap their hands as if nothing has happened  lest  the wrath of Goliath will fall upon them, and they will loose small  handouts and little benefits they receive as compensation. 

I have not in this article included Latin American countries and those of Africa which also suffered immensely from the wrath of the  un holy Goliath-the USA. However, I am surprised that Japan a country that honours its dead had not in memory of those  innocent Civilian Japanese men, women, and children, killed in Hiroshima and Nagasaki did not vote against the resolution on Sri Lanka presented by USA the perpetrator of those crime, but refrained from voting. It is a shame that Japan did not respect those that died a brutal death.

Reading this may open the eyes of those present at the UNHRCouncil Geneva sessions in March,2014, to see clearly who should really be in  the box of the accused.  USA by presenting a resolution against Sri Lanka is reversing the situation to absolve itself of the crimes which it has committed.

Being the arrogant Goliath who knows  that nobody will dare accuse him because of his might and muscle, has chosen a lamb-Sri Lanka for sacrificial rights to be performed by Navi Pillai, USA, UK, Canada, France, EU and the rest of the Europeans Countries.  India sleek in with them as a vulture smelling death to get nothing but a nod and a handshake from Goliath- and the mighty West. That satisfies the Indian ego to be with the mighty.

American Drone Attacks:

Aljazeera reported  this morning (12.2.2014) “Kareem Khan, whose brother and teenage son were killed in a drone attack in December 2009, was picked up at his home by security forces in the early hours of February 5, Shahzad Akbar said on Monday, the Agence France Press news agency reported. He was also due to travel to Europe on Saturday to speak with German, Dutch and British parliamentarians about his personal experience with drone strikes and the impact they are having on his country. Akbar gained prominence after disclosing the identity of the then CIA station chief in Islamabad in 2010 in an application filed in a Pakistani court against him for his alleged role in drone strikes. The case sparked loud criticism from Washington who accused Pakistan's intelligence agencies of leaking the name of the spy chief, who was later called back to Washington. According to an AFP tally, 2,155 people have been killed in drone attacks since August 2008, with critics charging that the strikes cause many civilian casualties.”

Civilian Deaths: American War in Iraq:

In Iraq war though the number of  troops killed could be estimated, the number of Iraqi civilians killed is not precise, though the Cost of War Projects gives an estimate  of  174,000. It is reported in Wikipedia, “  Regarding the Iraqis, however, information on both military and civilian casualties is  both less precise and less consistent. ”

Cluster Bombs

During the course of the war, according to a four-month investigation by USA Today, the U.S. dropped 10,800 cluster bombs on Iraq. “The bomblets packed inside these weapons wiped out Iraqi troop formations and silenced Iraqi artillery,” reported USA Today. “They also killed civilians. These unintentional deaths added to the hostility that has complicated the U.S. occupation.”

U.S. forces fired hundreds of cluster weapons into urban areas from late March to early April, killing dozens and possibly hundreds of Iraqi civilians. The attacks left behind thousands of unexploded bomblets that continued to kill and injure civilians weeks after the fighting stopped.

Because of the indiscriminate effect of these duds that keep killing long after the cessation of hostilities, the use of cluster munitions is banned by the international Convention on Cluster Munitions, which the United States has refused to sign.

Authorizing Torture by American Armed Forces :

Possibly anticipating a long, drawn-out occupation and counter-insurgency campaign in Iraq, in a March 2003 memorandum Bush administration lawyers devised legal doctrines justifying certain torture techniques, offering legal rationales “that could render specific conduct, otherwise criminal, not unlawful.”

They  argued that the president or anyone acting on the president’s orders are not bound by U.S. laws or international treaties prohibiting torture, asserting that the need for “obtaining intelligence vital to the protection of untold thousands of American citizens” supersedes any obligations the administration has under domestic or international law.

“In order to respect the President’s inherent constitutional authority to manage a military campaign,” the memo states, U.S. prohibitions against torture “must be construed as inapplicable to interrogations undertaken pursuant to his Commander-in-Chief authority.”

Over the course of the next year, disclosures emerged that torture had been used extensively in Iraq for “intelligence gathering. Numerous incidents of sadistic, blatant and wanton criminal abuses were inflicted on several detainees,” wrote Gen. Antonio Taguba, in a 53 page Classified Army Report, says Journalist Seymour Hersh in an article to Thr Nerw Yorker in May, 2004.

These actions, authorized at the highest levels, constituted serious breaches of international and domestic law, including the Convention Against Torture the Geneva Convention  relative to the treatment of Prisoners of War, as well as the U.S. War Crimes Act and the Torture Status.

War of America and its allies  against Libya:

Goliath- USA and its allies awaited a long time to  remove Colonel Gaddafi from leadership in Libya labelling him  a dictator. Finally,  when a group of dissidents rebelled in Bengazzi France seized the opportunity to support the rebels and armed them to fight against Libyan armed forces, France got USA and allies to finish off with Colonel Gaddafi, setting  up a Provisional Government with a urgently collected Libyan immigrants in France. The Western forces claimed the operation in Libya was aimed at protecting civilians.

But what was the real cause of Colonel Gaddafi’s removal.  He was no dictator to his people, and the group of dissidents in Bengazzi did not represent  the majority of the Libyan people.

In 1951 Libya was officially the poorest country in the world, but by the time of the 2011 uprising, Libyans' living standards were considered the highest in Africa. The GDP per Capita was more than double that of Egypt, and above that of Russia. Why then did Goliath that is USA of to-day and its allies wanted to dispose him from Leadership in Libya ?

It is said that Colonel Gaddafi had a project which was called the Gold Money Plan. The report goes:

Depleted Uranium bombs were dropped in Libya

The Center for Research on Globalization says the bombs and missiles that the US-led military alliance has dropped on several Libyan cities contain depleted uranium (DU).

Mahdi Darius Nazemroaya, a research associate at the CRG center, told Press TV that there are several international missions in Libya to gather evidence on NATO war crimes, including the use of DU. His remarks come weeks after the Stop the War Coalition said in its late March report that dozens of bombs and cruise missiles were launched by the US, British, and French forces — all with DU warheads — in the first 24 hours of the war on Libya. 

Depleted Uranium Bomb

DU munitions are controversial as their use is associated with long-term health concerns such as kidney damage, cancer, skin disorders and genetic defects. 

Nazemroaya, who is currently in Tripoli, said that NATO was also violating international laws by “bombing civilian structures, hospitals, civilian homes and hotels” in various parts of Libya. The developments come as the Western forces claim the operation in Libya is aimed at protecting civilians. 

Goliath  of  USA  keeps his homeland safe  and in peace, because the USA carries out wars away from home:

US is fighting a war far away from its homeland. From the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to Iraq and then Afghanistan and Pakistan, US never fought a war on its own land that’s why people of U.S are living in a peaceful environment without any fear of air strike, bombing, night raids and drone attack; they do not realize the fear of war. While innocent people of Afghanistan and Pakistan are paying for a sin which they haven’t committed. In fact these innocent casualties are becoming the cause of terror for civilians. Article 51/2 of Geneva Convention ‘Protection of the Civilian Population’ states: “The civilian population as such, as well as individual civilians, shall not be the object of attack. Acts or threats of violence the primary purpose of which is to spread terror among the civilian population are prohibited”.

The U.S and NATO led ISAF besides having highly sensitive technology and sophisticated spying systems are unable to differentiate and mark actual targets for which they have been spending huge amounts of money. Careless and unverified attacks caused innocent killings instead of actual targets. To kill few suspects killing of hundreds of innocents cannot be justified.

Pathetically, after more than ten years of continuous war and spending trillions of dollars, U.S and its allied forces did not realize that show of power is not the only solution to resolve the issues. Indeed the presence of foreign forces has created a complex situation in Afghanistan, as well as in Pakistan. In the presence of large number of US- led NATO forces, the suicide attacks, bombing and terrorist attacks are routine in both countries.

The United Nations reported that in the year of 2011 the civilian death toll in Afghanistan was 3,021 and 4,507 Afghans were wounded. According to other sources the actual number of civilian casualties was probably five times as large as the number that the UN mentioned. In February 2012 the annual report on ‘Protection of civilians in armed conflict’ prepared by the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), acknowledged that 3,021 civilian deaths last year is an increase of eight percent than the previous year’s total of 2,790. Jan Kubis, the head of UNAMA said that “for much too long, Afghan civilians have paid the highest price of war. Parties to the conflict must greatly increase their efforts to protect civilians to prevent yet another increase in civilian deaths and injuries in 2012.” He also stated that according to U.N. figures, “the Taliban and their allies were responsible for 79 percent of civilian casualties, Afghan and NATO led ISAF 9 percent, but it was not clear who was responsible for the remaining 12 percent of the casualties”.

Brutal killings of defenceless civilians, by air strikes, and drone attacks only been responding through an ‘apology’ by NATO. Apologies for civilian deaths cannot be enough because there is no justification of innocent killings, not at all. ……… international community were paying no attention and maintaining silence even NATO’s bombing killed thousands of innocent men, women and children from Yugoslavia, to Iraq, from Afghanistan to Libya and in Pakistan as well.

Civilian Deaths in American war in Afghanistan:

Again the exact numbers are not known  but said to be between 16725 -19013 deaths

Deaths in Hiroshima and Nagasaki-American Atomic Bombs:

Within the first two to four months of the bombings, the acute effects killed 90,000–166,000 people in Hiroshima and 60,000–80,000 in Nagasaki; roughly half of the deaths in each city occurred on the first day.

Vietnam a war on Civilians.

Nine-year-old Kim Phuc was with a group of civilians trying to flee the village when the planes mistook them for soldiers and bombed them with naplam. Ut captured Kim Phuc and others running out of the bombed village. She was naked from having her clothes burned off. Ut and some other journalists quickly ran to help the burned villagers, saving Kim’s life.

Few Americans born after the Tet Offensive know even the barest facts about the Vietnam War. I aim this generalization not at the oft-underrated Joe Sixpack but at graduates of our finest universities. I remember getting coffee with an old friend, then fresh out of Yale, right after she had backpacked through Vietnam. Whenever she mentioned the war she referred to the former South Vietnam as “the democratic side.” It was immediately clear that she, like virtually everyone else of her and my generation, had never heard of the Geneva Accords of 1954 to guarantee free elections in South Vietnam, elections scuttled after the CIA predicted that Ho Chi Minh would win. My friend had had no sense that the U.S. invaded (a word rarely used, but what else can you call sending 500,000 troops to a foreign nation?) South Vietnam to prop up an authoritarian government with little popular legitimacy. We launched a ruthless pacification campaign; it failed—but not before Washington spread the war into Laos and Cambodia and ultimately killed some two million civilians. This was the war, and there was no “democratic side.”

The numbers are numbing. According to study by Harvard Medical School and the University of Washington, there were 3.8 million violent war deaths, of which two million were civilian, with similar estimates reached by the Vietnamese government and Robert McNamara himself. A survey found that 96 percent of Marine Corps second lieutenants said they would torture prisoners to obtain information.

 developing nations in the hand of mighty America

The above facts have been recorded, and  evidence against USA  for war crimes it has committed are overwhelming.  But no resolution has been presented against USA for the crimes it has committed. It is unacceptable that USA which has committed war crimes with impunity stand before the United Nations Human Rights Council to present a resolution against Sri Lanka

But Sri Lanka  has been put in the box of the accused, and a  resolutions against Sri Lanka is presented at the UNHR Council by a criminal the USA whose violation of human rights and war crimes are well documented.  It is USA and its Western Allies who aided and abetted in those crimes who should be called for accountability.  No one who respects justice and fair play would stand along side USA and its allies  to vote in favour of the USA Resolution against Sri Lanka.

The USA resolution against Sri Lanka  is not motivated by any humanist sympathy towards the Tamil people of Sri Lanka.  It has a political agenda which is to divide Sri Lanka, so that the North and East of the Island could be used by USA and its allies to set up an American marine base for its Pacific fleet to stop Chinese and Russian influence in the Indian Ocean.

Therefore the countries participating in the 2014 session of the UNHR Council should  vote against the resolution presented by USA against Sri Lanka, in view of the democratic right of  all Sovereign States to be free and independent to choose its system of government  and develop their countries without being interfered by rich and powerful countries like USA and its Western Allies.

USA is a Destructive force, not a Constructive force-now trying to checkmate China and Russia using Sri Lanka as a pawn.

United States of America is a failed State, trying to recover its lost prestige and leadership through a Hitlarian methodology to create a white hegemony in the world- to become a police state. In its blind search for power it uses human rights as a weapon, regime change as an object, arming dissenting groups in countries as freedom fighters against the governments in place as a springboard to destabilise governments, and  impose trade embargoes as a  stranglehold to subjugate nations.

To-day America has become a world police state with its foot soldiers, the Ambassadors at Large, Assistant Secretaries of State, Ambassadors, NGOs, Human Rights Agencies, and  the American Naval Fleet, replacing  or  reducing the activities the of the  CIA , and its Secret Agents.    America never contributed to the welfare of any country in the world, nor  did it look after the welfare of  the indigenous American Indians at home.

Americas’ immigrants the  early settlers dispersed the indigenous population from their fertile lands, and killed them with diseases the European immigrants carried with them in to the land of America  and reduced the indigenous population occupied their land and became rich, but the new white American regimes that followed the early settlers never helped  the remaining indigenous population to come out of the hardship and poverty into which they were forced.  Even today after more than two centuries of their occupation the  American Governments encourage foreign immigrations leaving the indigenous population uncared underdeveloped.

Colonialism not only conquered territories but also colonised the minds of the people it colonised.  Therefore, generations later some of the natives of the ancient colonies  think like the ancient colonialists. Frantz Fanon in his great work , The Wretched of the Earth,  writes of this phenomenon.

“The colonialist  bourgeoisie, in its narcissistic  dialogue, expounded by the members of its universities , had in fact deeply  implanted in the minds of the colonized intellectuals  that the essential qualities remain  eternal in spite  of all the blunders men may make: the essential qualities of the West, of course. The native intellectual  accepted the cogency of these ideas, and deep down  in his brain  you could always find  a vigilant sentinel  ready to defend  the Graeco-Latin Pedestal.”

That may explain why the intelligentsia of   the developing countries of black Africa, brown  or yellow Asia that had been once colonised still having that “ vigilant sentinel ready to defend the Graeco-Latin Pedestal” vote with the ancient colonisers- America and the West against those who are like  them (Sri Lanka for instance)   made victims by the Americans and the Western Colonisers.

That explains also why we find in Sri Lanka those “colonised intellectuals ” of the opposition  not  joining hands with the Government on national issues for reasons distant away from actual dangers Sri Lanka faces to-day.

  

It is to those with colonised minds that the USA and the West still appeal,  be it TNA or UNP to betray their own motherland, and still they are those with these colonised minds despite the generation gap , like the Tamils of the Global Federation of Tamils, or the Sri Lanka Tamils of  the diaspora   appeal to USA and the West to intervene against the land in which they or their forefathers were born and bred.

USA flays democracy, making a mockery of it, and  pretends to be the paragon of human rights despite being the worst violators of human rights in the worlds, and a war criminal using  sophisticated drones killing thousands of civilians in Pakistan boarder villages.

The blood spattered paths USA had left behind in the world reek with the multitudes killed in Hiroshima, and Nagasaki, those burnt with napalm in Vietnam, massacred and tortured in Iraq, brutally killed, mutilated and the dead desecrated by urinating on them by the American soldiers in Afghanistan, and cities shattered to rubbles, and  leaders allowed to be tortured by mobs in Libya.

Yet America  carrying the balance of justice in one hand  and gun on the shoulder and a sward  dripping with hot blood of the innocent in the other hand , shows to the world that USA is a paragon of justice and protector of human rights, by accusing Sri Lanka for violation of human rights in the course of elimination of terrorists. 

Unlike those “illegal” wars of America and its allies in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya  etc., the war against terrorism carried out by Sri Lanka Armed Forces was a just war carried again its own terrorist, within its own territory.  In that war like in any other war some civilians may have died in cross fire, shooting by the terrorists or accidentally by the shootings of the soldiers, but not to the extent what  some western writers make it out to be, and they are not be believed because their skins are white.

America and its western allies have not contributed to the development of any of the poor developing countries, in Africa, Latin America, Middle East, or Asia.  They provided aid and loans  without transferring technology or know how, making the poor countries get trapped in debts to USA and the West.  The World Bank that gave loans dictated how those  loans should be utilised and did not allow the countries to carry out a system appropriate to their culture and economic and social conditions.  No country was allowed to follow any system of government other than that acceptable to USA and the Western allies. Socialism was anathema to USA.

Strangely it is the same that America demands of Sri Lanka in its resolution to be presented against Sri Lanka, “calls upon the President to develop a comprehensive policy towards Sri Lanka that reflects United States interests, including respect for human rights, democracy and the rule of law, economic interests, and security interests.”

In order to carry out those conditions to keep the developing countries loyal to America and the West they set up the CIA. 

A one time  CIA Agent and the author of “ The CIA and the cult of Intelligence”, John D.Marks wrote in the preface to his book “ In the high Councils of the Intelligence Community, there was no sense  that intervention  in the internal affairs of  other countries was not the inherent right  of the Unit.  “Don’t be an idealist;  you have to live in the “real world,” said the professionals. I found it increasingly difficult to  agree.”  He adds,

“ ……..I found a new job as executive assistant  to Senator Clifford Case of New Jersey.  Knowing of the Senator’s opposition to the war, I looked at my new work as a chance to change what I knew was wrong in the way the United States conducted its foreign policy. ”

That was in 1970 in the year USA invaded Cambodia.  Has it changed today ? 

In the USA resolution submitted to USA Congress for its approval  there is one clause which reads, “(5)calls upon the President to develop a comprehensive policy towards Sri Lanka that reflects United States interests, including respect for human rights, democracy and the rule of law, economic interests, and security interests.”

Why ? 

 What are the “ comprehensive policy towards Sri Lanka that reflects United States Interest.” ?  This is how USA perotects itself and carries out wars globally out side USA.

Ethnic conflict in the Balkans required navy carriers and cruise missile–launching surface ships and submarines to take part in strike operations against Serbian forces in Bosnia and Kosovo. Why should  the member states of  Africa, Middle East, Latin America, Asia that would be sending delegates to the UN Human Rights Council Sessions vote for this utterly high handed resolution  to keep Sri Lanka under  a servile position to United States ?  

Is it not a warning for all developing countries to keep vigil ?

Doesn’t  it  sound a world dictatorship by USA ?

Every intelligent delegates attending the UN HR Council Sessions  in March this year should think well over this resolution which is against Sri Lanka today, but  which may well be against their own countries tomorrow. Therefore they should in all honesty to themselves  vote against the USA resolution against Sri Lanka to show to USA, European Union and other Western Countries that we the developing countries are no pawns in the checkerboard of their politics.

USA and its Allies have not helped any country in the world to develop , but readily entered into those countries to destroy their aspirations, kill or remove their leaders and set pro American and Western puppet Regimes.

Since the commencement of CIA America used  CIA agents to change regimes. In 1950 Jacob Arbenz President of Guatemala was ousted , Mossadeq Prime Minister of Iran was ousted  also in 1950,Salvadore Allende President of Chile was ousted in  1973.

Larry Devlin a former CIA Agents recounts in his memories how he was ordered to kill Patrice Lumumba of Congo. More recently when Barack Obama was elected the 44th President of USA every one thought that the world has at last got rid of a  war mongering blood thirsty  USA State Department and the CIA ,  and replaced it with a State Department that would give new hope to the American people and the world, and at last have the good fortune to  see a more civilized  non aggressive America. But situation soon changed. 

The  American State Department changed tactics from involving CIA in wars for changing regimes, and inventing Human Rights, R2P, NGOs, and has roped in the UN Human Rights Commissioner herself a Tamil,  in its new war against developing countries by directly entering into the scene with bombs and artillery and subterfuge the UN Security council to declare war against countries.

Hillary Clinton said that all rebels cannot be put into the same basket as terrorists. Thereafter only those who took up arms against USA and its allies were the terrorists for the American State Department,  the rest were rebels  or freedom fighters. The result is the turning cities in to rubble not caring  for the ensuing deaths of civilians, we saw it in Iraq, Afghanistan ,Serbia and Libya.

USA and its allies  befriended the armed dissenters of the Gaddafi administration in Bengazi as rebels and secretly armed them,  and followed up by sending NATO Forces to bomb Libya.  USA was ready to start a  similar disaster against, Syria which was stopped with the timely intervention of Russia.   They were preparing such aggression against Iran and North Korea.  They helped the dissenters in Egypt and Tunisia to oust the leaders, and creating chaos in those countries

Now it has become the turn of Sri Lanka  to receive the wrath of the USA State Department, for eliminating the terrorists-( the American State Department’s Freedom fighters) without consulting the American State Department.  Sri Lanka for USA is a strategic land mark to control the rising power of China and Russia and to keep them under surveillance.  But Sri Lanka is neither Syria nor Libya therefore USA has to use other methods to bring Sri Lanka to its knees.

Therefore , if Sri Lanka does not subordinate itself USA only means to force subjugation is using  a Tamil ethnic problem and inform the world that Sri Lanka’s elimination of terrorism was a discrimination against the Tamil ethnic Community to which the terrorists belonged.  Therefore USA hopes to rally all countries against Sri Lanka and move a resolution against Sri Lanka for violation of human rights and war crimes.

Barrack Obama’s band of footsloggers the Ambassadors-at-Large Stephen Rapp, Catherine Russell,  Assistant Secretary of State Nisha Desai Biswal came to Sri Lanka assisted by Michele J. Sison the USA Ambassador in Sri Lanka to  sniff around looking for people willing to give false evidence against the  Government and its Armed Forces.  They found an ideal person in the wife of a former terrorist, naïve and in eager to impress the white Americans, and seem to have found her version of the terrorist war more acceptable than that of the Government or the President.

USA State Department then produces those unsubstantiated evidence as factual evidence against Sri Lanka without  producing the witnesses claiming that if their identity is made known they will be prosecuted by the government.  But in respect to the host country, the visiting “dignitaries” and the Ambassador have to present the witnesses  and allow them  to be cross examined by Sri Lanka before their statements are accepted  as evidence against Sri Lanka or its Armed Forces.

But nothing of the sort has been done and the Darusman Report which was originally a report  prepared for the information of the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon is presented as an official document with the condition that the names of the witnesses would be disclosed only  after 20 years.  This is a complete travesty of justice by the USA and their Western allies. 

USA, EU and all international  reactionary Forces are up against a small country Sri Lanka, which has  no nuclear ambition,  which is not preparing a marine forces  to commence an international warfare, or amassing arms of mass destruction.   

But only thing Sri Lanka has done is to eliminate a group of terrorists that made the people of the country suffer for 30 long years.  It is now desirous of developing the country and make the people live happily in peace. Is that a crime  ?

Does that necessitate USA and its allies to rake up the past and investigate what happened  five years ago in the course of the elimination of a ruthless group of terrorists.

It is evident that USA which is not a constructive force but a destructive force is  now on the war path against Sri Lanka not because of its great love for the Tamil Community, and not because it has any valid evidence against human rights violation or war crimes, but because a divided Sri Lanka would make it more convenient  for America to set up a marine base for its Pacific Fleet.  The Tamils do not understand this and provide means for America’s Agenda to check-mate China and Russia. 

That is the reason for the USA Resolution which is to be moved against Sri Lanka at the UNHRCouncil Sessions in Geneva in March,2014.  The resolution is evidence of that Agenda on which USA and its allies are moving the resolution against Sri Lanka  

The last clause no. (5) of the USA  resolution against Sri Lanka is which lets the cat out of the bag. 

The real reason for the resolution  is to: calls upon the President to develop a comprehensive policy towards Sri Lanka that reflects United States interests, including respect for human rights, democracy and the rule of law, economic interests, and security interests. It is another way to tell Sri Lanka that is a small country and it is best that it kneels before the greater power of USA , EU and its Allies.

The resolution demands:

(1)commends the representatives of the United States on their leadership on United Nations Human Rights Council Resolution (UNHRC) 22/1, adopted by the UNHRC on March 21, 2013, which promotes reconciliation and accountability in Sri Lanka;

(2)calls on the United States and the international community to establish an independent international accountability mechanism to evaluate reports of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and other human rights violations committed by both sides during and after the war in Sri Lanka;

(3)urges the Government of Sri Lanka to allow unimpeded access for media, international aid agencies, and human rights groups into all regions of the country, as well as to detention sites that may hold political and war prisoners;

(4)urges the Government of Sri Lanka to end its media restrictions, including the obstacles to the flow of information in the North and East, and bring to justice those responsible for attacks on journalists and newspaper offices; and

(5)calls upon the President to develop a comprehensive policy towards Sri Lanka that reflects United States interests, including respect for human rights, democracy and the rule of law, economic interests, and security interests.

I appeal to the delegates who will be at the UNHRCouncil Sessions in Geneva, next  March  not to give into global power politics to make of the developing countries Satellite States of the USA power block, and sell their Sovereignty to USA and its Allies in fear of their threats, or for their promises which they do not keep. 

I appeal the  respectful Delegates to vote against the US resolution against Sri Lanka.    

Izeth Hussain is Re-thinking the Ethnic Imbroglio

I read Izeth Hussain  for  his  excellent writing skill,  but do not agree with all he writes.  In his article to Island on Re-thinking the Ethnic Imbroglio, he says, “….. most will agree that in general we are usually reluctant to see things as they are when they are unpleasant .” But does it mean that we see things as they are when they are pleasant  ?”

We tend to think we know every thing but in reality what we know is limited  to the knowledge we have acquired. With that limited knowledge we pontificate  that others are at fault because they have failed to see things as they do

In support of his conclusion he says, “… example is provided by the question of the prospects for a political solution of the ethnic problem.”

If the government does not see the reality of the prospects for a political solution of the ethnic problem, what then is “ethnic problem” according to Izeth Hussain ?

Everyone accusing  Sri Lanka for committing everything under the sun against the  Tamil people from violation of human rights,   to war crimes, speaks loudly of this “sacrosanct ethnic problem” without telling  what exactly is this ethnic problem.

In order to stop this accusation on a vague allusion to an ethnic problem the President of Sri Lanka in no uncertain terms declared that with the elimination of terrorism there is no more a minority and that every peoples no matter to what community they belong have an equal right to share in everything as a citizen of Sri Lanka.

There is therefore, no language problem as Tamil is recognised on an equal footing alongside Sinhala and English.  University education is extended to all students of all communities, without any ratios or percentages. Employment is open to every one and candidates are selected on qualifications and not on the basis of their communal roots.  Tamils are being recruited to the army and the police services.  All social, economic, and technological developments has been extended all regions in Sri Lanka .  Major development projects  such as construction of roads, hospitals, schools,  providing of fresh water and electricity, and construction of fishing ports are being carried out everywhere from north to south and west to east of Sri Lanka. The political right  of contesting any electorate, and representing the people in Parliament are open to every citizen.

The Tamils have not been left out in Sri Lanka’s development projecs and they participate in them as any other citizen of Sri Lanka.  What then is the “ethnic problem” ?  Against what has the Tamil people been discriminated ?

Izeth Hussain paints a dark picture saying,“ The prospects are nil, or almost nil. The realistic prospect is that the ethnic imbroglio will continue indefinitely into the future. Such is the situation after 25 years of war and four years of peace. Our expectation that peace would lead, sooner rather than later, to noon-tide glory in the resplendent isle, has led instead to what looks like darkness at

noon.  ”  Then he adds, “……..What this situation demands, above all, is that we rethink the fundamentals of the ethnic imbroglio. It is a process that could lead to our posing the right questions which could lead eventually to the right answers.”

But still Izeth Hussain does not say what it is all about. He finally asks, “What is the problem? ”  But he does not answer it, but goes on to stretch out a whole lots of words and phrase, as if he himself is completely ignorant of the ethnic problem, what ever be the prospect of it for a political solution.

 He says, “ It is not just a Sri Lankan ethnic problem, but an Indo-Sri Lankan ethnic problem, as I have argued in an earlier article. The fall-out in Tamil Nadu of what happens to the Tamils in Sri Lanka can never be ignored by the Delhi Government because that fall-out can take the form of restiveness and even a rebelliousness that spawns separatist movements that under certain unforeseeable contingencies could even threaten the very unity of India.”

Izeth Hussain is becoming verbose just writing for the sake of writing without explaining in simple terms what he is writing about. His beginning has no relation to the end.  What is the ethnic problem in Sri Lanka which has resulted in an imbroglio?

Izeth Hussain is a retired diplomat well into his eighties.  He still thinks that old diplomatic methods and politeness should be maintained in speaking to the rich and powerful west lest we bring on us  their ire.  After a few paragraphs of his pet phrases rambling about Cyprus, Turkey and Pakistan he finally comes out  saying,  “ General Zia-ul Huq of Pakistan, one of the most sympathetic friends of Sri Lanka, was quite right in advising us repeatedly – not in his exact words: "If you try to solve your ethnic problem regardless of the wishes of India, you will sink into a bottomless pit".

But he has still not thought it right to spell out what is the ethnic problem of  the Tamils in Sri Lanka.

Then taking the longest rout in trying to  explaining his “ re-thinking the Ethnic Imbroglio” , he comes to some thing which seems likely to explain the “ethnic problem”.  He says, “I come now to the present unpleasant situation. Neither the TNA nor the Government wants 13A, and there is nothing else on offer to enable us to start moving towards a political solution. However, there is a difference between the two in that the TNA is willing to give 13A a try – which is why I wrote in the second paragraph above that the prospects for a political solution are nil "or almost nil". But I cannot envisage the TNA really being in earnest about 13A until after the Indian General elections.”

But no Izeth Hussain is still far short of  explaining the vital question, “ what is this ethnic problem ?”

Then as if  he is facing the darkness of the mind we all come to face towards the evening of our lives, he says,  “ The unpleasant reality is that it is darkness at noon.  What do we do? ……….. The suggestion that I am making might seem humiliating and most offensive to our national pride. Why, it might be asked, should two outsiders, namely Tamil Nadu and Delhi, be regarded as integral to our purely internal ethnic problem?

But what is this ethnic problem ?  Izeth Husain does not answer this, but to make it worse he clears India of what it did in training a group of Tamil youth in terrorism and letting them loose in the North, to kill in cold blood 13 Sinhala police men, thus resulting in the south a backlash in which many innocent Tamils were brutally killed, which is not condoned by any reasonable person, but it was an inevitable and perhaps preconceived situation by the Indian RAW which trained the terrorists, to create the state of terrorism in the Island, that it followed..

In respect of this Izeth Hussain says, “ ……… It was the anti-Tamil genocidal State-backed pogrom of 1983 that gave the external dimension to the problem, by shocking and outraging the rest of the world and making it impossible for Tamil Nadu and Delhi to ignore what was going on inside the blood-drenched paradise isle of Sri Lanka."

He then makes an objective  observation without still answering what is the ethnic problem.

“ The Tamils must acknowledge that the LTTE and the TNA put themselves completely in the wrong by rejecting every proposal for devolution from 1994 to 2000, by making a farce of the peace process, and finally by compelling the Sinhalese to fight the war to its conclusion. They must acknowledge that the Sinhalese side fought a just war in the sense that they had no alternative whatsoever. Both sides must acknowledge that they fought a savage war with no prisoners taken.”

Izeth Hussain then makes his lethal attack  on the  Sinhala camp, “ The Sinhalese side must acknowledge that the discrimination against the Tamils went to grotesque extremes from 1970 to 1977, and that that was followed by the State terrorism of JRJ which rose to a genocidal apogee in 1983 when the Tamils were treated as worse than pariah dogs……….”

Izeth Hussain then forgets his diplomatic good sense, and an ordinary man’s wisdom,  in the heat of his arguments to call terrorism of Prabhakaran a just war.  He says, “The Sinhalese must recognize that the Tamils had the following alternatives: either be reduced to worse than pariah dog status, or fight. They must acknowledge that the LTTE fought a just war from around April 1994 onwards until the just war shifted to the other side.”

Then Izeth Hussain  kicks away his diplomatic correctness, and adherence to a Nation that suffered for three long decades under terrorism stating that, “….. The accolade of Sri Lanka’s greatest terrorist should go to JRJ and not to Prabhakaran. The latter led a nationalist movement, but most unfortunately for the Tamils his was a regressive tribalist neo-Fascist nationalism, similar to that of the JVP and what the nationalism of the present Government is threatening to become…….”

All that is raking the past to let loose the anger he seems to harbour in his heart.  But the ethnic problem he commenced to write about  remains undefined.

Is the ethnic problem not giving the Tamil people an entire Province for themselves, without an inch of it given to the Sinhala, or is it giving to the Tamils a Tamils Eelam in the North and East, which Prabhakaran was determined to carve out with his terrorism ?

Either of these options if it is to keep away  any fall outs from India and  Tamil Nadu is not acceptable .  Therefore they do not count as solutions for any sort of ethnic problems, though they become a national problem.  An alternative would be for Sri Lanka to abolish political parties with communal distinctions, and have a two party political system, like in America, with the membership open to all citizens.  Such a situation would make it possible for even a Tamil man to become the President of Sri Lanka. That may  solve an ethnic problem if that is what Izeth Hussain means.

C.Wijeyawickrema in an article in Lanka web states clearly what according to him is the ethnic problem, which Izeth Hussain had failed to do. Wijeyawickrema says, “The ethnic problem was two-fold: the fear of the Sinhalese of Tamil Nadu aggression and the desire of Tamil politicians to have some power of governance (because they were deprived of the leading roles that had under the colonial system of divide and rule).”   He says the two ethnic problems  could have been solved a long time ago if  Sinhala politicians used Buddhist principles.
