Letter to President Barack Obama to explain why a Resolution against Sri Lanka at UNHR Council in Geneva will be against his Political philosophy

President Barack Obama
1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr.President,

I congratulate you on your re-election.  I am Sri Lankan by birth.  Therefore, your foreign policies affecting Sri Lanka interest me. I entreat you to please bear with me and read through the  following matters  I am bringing to your  attention and pray you for action.

Mr.President, your time is precious therefore I will be as brief as possible . It is about Sri Lanka an Island,   slightly larger than the State of  West Virginia, with a population  of about 20.4 million with  the government of which your State Department had not been fair in the application of harsh political dictates opposed to your political philosophy,  since its elimination of a ruthless group of terrorists that terrorised the Island for thirty years.

From your speeches and writings  I expect a radical change in your foreign policies from that of the pervious Presidents of USA.  But when your policies are being carried out by those whose thinking differ from yours , they become different from what is expected under you Presidency.

You are of Afro-American origin Mr.President, nevertheless, in your  great political wisdom you did not identify yourself  as an Afro American but as an American.  That is the  key to your  popularity, and to be  acclaimed the President of the United States of America.

Your admirable political success lies in that ability to have buried your “ Communal” identity in the larger interest of a political unity of all minor and major Communities in America.  You said in your second inaugural address, “…… what binds this nation together is not the colors of our skin or the tenets of our faith or the origins of our names. What makes us exceptional – what makes us American – is our allegiance to an idea, articulated in a declaration made more than two centuries ago……”

But, in the application of  foreign policies of your Government  in relation to multi-ethnic Sri Lanka the policy makers of your State Department should see the ethnic problems in that country  in the light of the way you solved the ethnic problem in America , but White Americans whose mentality is different,  have failed to grasp the essence of  your political philosophy. Therefore, their political views are diametrically opposed to yours. As a result the  Government of Sri Lanka  is made to suffer from their failure to perceive the problem in that country in its correct perspective without engaging in divisive politics.

The problems in Sri Lanka as well as in many developing countries come from the  conflicts between the minority Communities and  the majority community  which normally hold  the political power as it had been the case even in America .  It is more complex where there are tribal differences such as in Africa  or religious difference  such as in  Muslim Countries.

So far the American Foreign policy,  as much as those of the countries of the International Community, had been to maintain this ethnic difference in developing countries in order to stop communal unity and allow the States to disintegrate according to Communal differences- in other words to facilitate Balkanization of Sovereign States,  according to a planned political Agenda

This is not the political philosophy with which  you identify,  which you demonstrated by steering away without falling into the trap of  Communal politic in the USA.
As you know  Mr.President the task of uniting  ethnic Communities in America is after all not that difficult as  all communities speak the same language, and have  more or less the same religion or have similar religions.

But when it comes to a country like Sri Lanka where there are  three major Communities , Sinhala 75 % of the population, Tamil 14 %  and Muslims 9%  , speaking Tamil and Sinhala languages and having three different religions,  the task of bringing together the Communities into a one whole nation is  not without difficulties.

Sri Lanka had no Communal problems since its independence in 1948. However, in 1970’s there began conflicts between the Tamil Political Leaders and the Sinhala Majority Government, when  the Tamil  political leaders demanded parity of status for the 13% of the Tamil Community along with the  75 % Sinhala majority Community.

Eventually  a group of  unemployed Tamil youth in the North of Sri Lanka , coerced by the nearby TamilNadu State in India, after being  trained  in terrorist warfare, was released in the North of Sri Lanka in 1983.  This group of  terrorists killed a number of Sinhala Police officers stationed in the North, which started a communal riot during which large numbers of Tamils left Sri Lanka making that a reason to ask for  political asylum, though most of them were in fact economic refugees.

They settled down in UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Netherland etc.  They  were organised by the Sri Lanka terrorists into Terrorist  Front Organisations, to collect funds for terrorism in Sri Lanka with the promise that they will eventually, through terrorism wrench away the North of Sri Lanka to form a separate Homeland for Tamils.

It is the second and third generation of these economic refugees  who have not even visited Sri Lanka now represent  the Terrorist Front Organisations in USA and other foreign counties.. However, the terrorism that began then lasted 30 years, with massacres, assassinations, and bomb blasts in which many lives were lost.  .  The terrorists  collected considerable sums of money through their Terrorist Front Organisations, which is said to be about US$ 300 million per year, from the expatriate Tamils, with which they built  a powerful terrorist military force.

In 2005 Mr Mahinda Rajapakse was elected the President of Sri Lanka.  By then the terrorists had become  a considerably powerful military  force with modern military equipment, owning more than ten cargo vessels,  planes and a fleet of Dovra boats. In 2009 the Armed Forces of Sri Lanka wiped out the terrorists.

Having brought back peace to the country,  the government of the President Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse, launched  large scale development programmes.  He started many project in the North and East of Sri Lanka to help the Tamil people who had suffered mostly from terrorism.

Hardly  a year after the elimination of the terrorists, the International Community and  many human rights organisations began a campaign against Sri Lanka for so called violation of human rights and unaccounted civilian deaths during the last phase of the military operations against the terrorists.  Many  false video footings  were prepared by anti Government forces financed by the Tamil  Terrorist Front Organisations in USA, Canada etc., and distributed world wide.

The  Terrorist Front Organisations continue to collect  funds, and the bulk of the money collected are available to them to  finance their multi-pronged  campaigns against Sri Lanka, with a plan to revive terrorism again to break up Sri Lanka to Se up a Tamil homeland.

These  Terrorist Front Organisations in America have formed  a group called the Tamils for Obama, which has paid considerable funds  for your   Presidential  election campaign.  As these funds collected by Terrorist Front Organisations  fall into the category of “ Money Laundering and indirect  financing for terrorism”, the contributions  from the Terrorist Front Organisations –Tamils for Obama  should not have been accepted for  your Presidential Campaign.  Accepting these funds only strengthen their hope for the revival of terrorism in Sri Lanka.

Mr. President, it is disheartening to  see  that, while the President of Sri Lanka and his government work to integrate the  three Communities into a  Nation of Sri Lankans,  it is  the American State Department and the  International Community which have come together to keep alive the separatist political environment in Si Lanka, and perpetuate its existence when you in your wisdom Mr.President contributed to stop the separatist Communal  politics in America.

In order to satisfy the detractors accusing the Sri Lanka Government Armed Forces for violation of human rights and war crimes, the President of Sri Lanka appointed a Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission(LLRC), to look into how the war against terrorism was carried out and if there had been  violations of human rights during the terrorist war. The report of the LLRC had made recommendations to be implemented by the government. The government is in the process of carrying out many projects by way of reconciliation, and bringing the Communities together.

The way the President of Sri Lanka sees the  post terrorist reconciliation is not different from your own political views, he would have very well said what you said  in your inaugural address, “. A decade of war is now ending. An economic recovery has begun. America’s ( Sri Lanka’s) possibilities are limitless, for we possess all the qualities that this world without boundaries demands: youth and drive; diversity and openness; an endless capacity for risk and a gift for reinvention. My fellow Americans,(Sri Lankans) we are made for this moment, and we will seize it – so long as we seize it together.” (I have entered Sri Lanka to make clear what I mean)

President Mahinda Rajapakse  stated immediately after the terrorist war that there are no majority  or  minority Communities in Sri  Lanka,  but only good or bad Sri Lankans.
In order to   facilitate  the integration of all Communities in to a common Sri Lankan Nationality,  he made Sri Lanka a tri lingual country with Sinhala, Tamil, and English having official status.  He gave priority to carry out infrastructure developments in the North  and East  of Sri Lanka, the provinces in which a majority of Tamils live.

These provinces  which had no electricity or drinking water  have been provided with these facilities on a priority basis.    A large irrigation reservoir has just been constructed. New schools, hospitals , banks and Welfare Centres have been constructed .  Many housing project have been commenced, with  in some projects the Armed Forces deployed in civilian activities for construction of  roads, bridges, houses, cultivation of farm land , training students in leadership, and even in  hotel and restaurant services.

As much  as you Mr. President   did not want  Americans identified according to their   ethnicity  such as, Black Americans, White Americans, Afro Americans, Latino Americans, Chinese Americans, or Muslim Americans, but  as Americans, the President of Sri Lanka Mr.Mahinda Rajapaksa too does not  want Sinhala Sri Lankans, Tamil Sri Lankans or Muslim Sri Lankans, but he wants all of them to be just  Sri Lankans. “ Now, more than ever, we must do these things together, as one nation, and one people.”, those are your words Mr. President.

The terrorist in Si Lanka were very cunning, they wanted the terrorists represented in the Parliament of Si Lanka hence they Organised  a political party the Tamil National Alliance.  After the elimination of terrorism the Tamil  National Alliance was not disbanded.  And now they , the TNA speak for the separatist expatriate Tamil Terrorist Front organisations.  The TNA  continue to  represent the voice of the terrorists.   They want to keep alive the ethnic difference to exist as their own future as politicians depends on Communal Politics. They are all out  Mr. President , to stop any action to integrate the Tamil Community in to the mainstream Sri Lankan Nationhood even  though they are not the sole  representatives of the Tamil Community

Mr. President, be assured that there is no discrimination against any Community in this aspiration of the President of Sri Lanka for its people.  But the white politicians of th West  cannot understand this.  Your former Secretary of State  Mrs. Hillary Clinton too could not understand this political philosophy to which you too had whole heartedly adhered, a country like America without minority Communities and a majority Community.

Mrs. Hillary  Clinton was “made” to disagree with such a policy in Sri Lanka by the Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Mr. Robert O’Blake who was a close  friend of the terrorists when he was stationed in Sri Lank as the American Ambassador. Mr.Robert O’Blakes  has a personal score to settle with the President of Sri Lanka as he resorted to a military solution to terrorist problem,  against a political solution proposed by  Mr.O’Blake.

The Sri Lanka Terrorists who were a ruthless terror mongers in Sri Lanka, maintained good relations with foreign NGOs and Western Embassies and visiting foreign delegates.  There was therefore the tendency for the foreigners to consider them  as “rebels” or “freedom fighters”.  It is only the Sri Lankans  who were suffering directly from their ruthless ferocity who saw their real face of terrorism.  The result of this misconception is that the  USA and the International Community making use of every opportunity to attack Sri Lanka , looking for an opportunity for a regime change,  and if possible divide Sri Lanka allowing the Tamils to have a separate  homeland in the North.

With this in view US State Department moved a resolution at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva against Sri Lanka demanding,  of all thing, to implement the recommendations of the LLRC, the Commission appointed by the President of Sri Lanka himself.  The Government of Si Lanka Mr. President should not be coerced to implement its own Commission’s recommendation.  This is only a  move to satisfy the Tamil Terrorist Front Organisation in USA.

Your State Department is proposing another resolution against Sri Lanka at  the next session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. This Mr. President is a wrong move on the Part of the State Department, and I write to pray you to please look into the matter and advice  the Secretary of the  State  Department to advice, the Ambassador Eileen C. Donahoe , the US Representative to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva to stop any further action on the proposed resolution against Sri Lanka.

Yours respectfully, Mr. President,

Dear Mr. President,
Congratulations on your re-election.  We are delighted and we feel rewarded.
During the campaign season we raised funds for your campaign; we polled opinion among Tamil Americans (95% preferred you), and distributed this result in the battleground states (all the major networks reported it on their websites); our Tamil American friends, working with your campaign, worked at phone banks in the days leading up to the election; We made and distributed two not-so-obviously-partisan videos. The links to these videos can be seen at these locations.

The Secret Why International Community will lineup against Sri Lanka in Geneva this March as usual.

There are violations of human rights, war crimes, unaccounted number of civilian deaths, by the
wars against terrorism carried out by the Armed Forces of the USA, and the Member States of the International Community. There are tribal wars in Africa, armed conflict in the countries of the Middle East where summary killings have taken place. There are violations of the human rights of low caste Indians, the aborigines of Australia, New Zealand, Canada and America.

But, the State Department of USA, the UN Human Rights Commission, the Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International or the International Crisis Group have not passed any resolutions against any of these Countries, nor do they demand a permanent Mission in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Sudan, or Darfur.

But Why ?

Probably because these places are dusty, dirty, hot, without clean drinking water, clean accommodation, and  the people are half naked or not wearing clean garment, therefore not pleasant to be posted for service or investigations. None of these countries are  like Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka is a very pleasant place, people are very hospitable, it is cheap, and people in Sri Lanka  receives strangers very warmly and invite them to cocktail parties, the beaches are clean secure and enjoyable. The  ethnic problem which is   kept floating by pro terrorist TNA is  convenient, so that a foreigner posted in Sri Lanka can go to any place mix with all communities and  say nice things about the country but nevertheless pull up the government and say they will vote against the Government on USA Resolution against Sri Lanka to be presented by  USA,  like  Alistair Burt Parliamentary Under Secretary of Foreign and Commonwealth Office in UK said at the end of his visit. They are good powerful men though we may  wrongly assume they are utter hypocrites.

The Ministers of the Sri Lanka  Government are  always ready with a broad smile to listen to foreign diplomats and International Officials and they are well treated and even presented with gifts, even if the government is pulled up by them for violation of human rights or war crimes.

So why should any one of the members of the International Communities or their  agencies whose hobby is looking for violation of human rights of all sorts, bother about what happens to the human rights of those living   in  those godforsaken countries, where the life is hard, nauseating and not so pleasant and enjoyable as it is  in Sri Lanka ?

Therefore Sri Lanka is the place  to come to demand accountability for past crimes even if they were in the elimination of a ruthless group of terrorists that made the life difficult for 30 years to the people of that country- Sri Lanka

That is the reason why  they look to Sri Lanka where there is enough to keep themselves occupied interviewing TNA Mps ,Sampanthans, Pakisothy Saravanamuttus , NGOs, Tamils in Jaffna, Muslims in Colombo, Sinhalese in the South.  The International Community will not have it  better anywhere else.
Fishermen back at work after terrorism in Northern Sri Lanka

In addition to that the terrorists in Sri Lanka were good friends of the International Community.  In those good old days when Prabhakaran was living and the terrorism was in full swing,  most of the Ambassadors, and government representatives  from the International Community coming to inquire about ethnic problems, terrorist situation  and progress of after tsunami  reconstruction work went  to Killinochchi and stayed with  Thamilselvam  and his terrorists eating lobsters and sipping cold beer.

Even a woman member of the Monitoring Mission was said to have  been the girl friend of a terrorist one Pulendran  or such. The day she was leaving after her service with the SMM, she had insisted to go and see him before she leaves. They were therefore against a military solution to the terrorist problem in Sri Lanka, how can they promote any thing  so dangerous to their good friends !!!

They insisted on a political solution Robert Blake the then American Ambassador taking the lead.  Robert Blake went to a University in Tamil Nadu  during the height of the military offensive against the terrorists, and made a speech to say  why according to him the  Military Solution to terrorism resorted to by the Government of Sri Lanka was a wrong decision.

These Sri Lanka terrorists amassed a considerable amount of money   collecting well over millions of dollars every month from the expatriate Tamils.  They had bought Ships, planes and modern military and communication material;  some even  donated  by the Embassy of Netherland .

After the elimination of the terrorists this considerable sum of  money is in the hands of the  terrorist front agencies of the Tamil expatriates.  They have now even set up a Transitional Government of Tamil Eelam, and a Global Tamil Forum.

They are continuing to collect funds from the expatriate Tamils. The huge sums of money coming into their hands are not sent to Sri Lanka for the benefit of the Tamils who suffered under terrorism, but that money is being distributed freely  in the West amoung  Western politicians, the media, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, International Crisis Group, to campaign against the Government of Sri Lanka with the intention of setting up a Tamil Eelam State in  Sri Lanka.

They had even formed a group called the Tamils for Obama which had generously contributed to the President Barrack Obama’s election campaigns.
See Copy oif their letter to Obama below

Therefore American State Department takes advice  from the pro terrorist Tamil expatriates, even though none of them had visited Sri Lanka and  have first hand information  about Sri Lanka under  terrorism or Sri Lanka after  terrorism.

The Assistant Secretary of the State Department  for South and Central  Asian  Robert Blake - the friend of the  former Sri Lanka Terrorists  promotes the anti Sri Lanka government moves as a revenge for resorting to a Military Solution against terrorism,  against his advice.  He is supposed to be consulting  Pakiasothy Saravanamuttu, Jehan Perera and Ganeshan  among other anti government NGOs.

There is unlimited billions of Dollars available  with the anti-Sri Lanka  pro Terrorist Tamil Expatriate Front Agencies .

With that they Bribe Western Ministers, Senators, the Western Security Forces and thus are able to wave the Sri Lanka terrorist flag in any of the manifestations in UK, Canada, USA, Australia etc., with complete impunity despite the fact that  the LTTE is a banned terrorist  Group in all these countries.

This time in March, 2013,  their money will start flowing in Geneva , and the countries  in the West will plan their anti Sri Lanka Campaign.  UK TV Channel 4 is according to information already in the process of preparing their  false documentaries, with “doctored” photos of Army Soldiers shooting at seated blindfolded terrorist prisoners !!!

It is the smell of this  Blood Money of  the   Sri Lanka Terrorist that draws even head of states in some countries like Canada,  Desmond Tutu in South Africa,  and enable USA to draw up another resolution against Sri Lanka with the assurance of votes from a good number of States drawn by the “smell of blood money”.

This is the secret why Sri Lanka is a popular “playing field” for the Canadians, Australians, UK, USA and their Agencies the UK Channel 4, Navi Pillai, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, International Crisis Group, the media Colombo Telegraph, etc. to put up their tents and plan miseries for Sri Lanka, as if it is the only country in the world that  had violated human rights in eliminating terrorism.

Why do they Single Out Sri Lanka for violation of Human rights ever since it eliminated a ruthless group of terrorists ?

In Sri Lanka we are never allowed,  by the International Community and its lackeys, to say that we have done with a problem  it is now over and go ahead  doing more essential things for the Country and the people.

Elimination of Terrorism.

We eliminated four years ago  the  canker of terrorism that had been eating in to the flesh of our nation for 30 long years, but the International Community along with its palsied Agencies the Human Rights Watch, International Crisis Group, Amnesty International and Navi Pillai keep alive the cruel loathsome memories of terrorism, accusing us for its elimination .

But that elimination of terrorism we carried out within our own country without putting in peril the lives and property of the people of any other country. The Sri Lanka Armed Forces carried out military operations  against the terrorists without causing the least damage to property or lives of the Civilian population.  If there were civilian deaths it had been caused by  the terrorists who cared least for the deaths of the civilians, who instead  used the civilian population to ensure their own safety.

These International Communities and their Agencies  who made their appearance  only after  the terrorists were eliminated to pick holes, and search evidence to accuse the Armed Forces for war crimes are only carrying out the demands of the  pro-terrorist Tamil expatriates, residing in their countries in large numbers who have become  a  useful vote bank for  those politicians  who promote their cause of discrediting Sri Lanka..

They do not for an instance take time to evaluate the war against the  evil of  terrorism in Sri Lanka as  against the terrorist  wars of the USA and their European Allies against the Talibans  in Afghanistan and Al Qaida in Iraq.

Who have killed more civilians Sri Lanka Armed Forces or USA and its Allies ?  Why is it that  no one passes a resolution against the USA and its  Allies for continuous drone attacks, bombardments by NATO killing thousands of civilians, and killing of civilians by mentally deranged American Soldiers ?  Why is Navi Pillai  not asking the USA and its Western Allies for accountability ?

Why cannot India, who wants to be in the Company of the Western powers  even if they by their actions in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and Syria have shown to be greater criminals, stand up against the West and refuse to support their resolution against Sri Lanka which is only a means for USA and its allies  to cover their utter nakedness  of being  cowards and criminals ?

These shameless International Communities - the pseudo global policemen, should first put their own houses in Order before running to accuse Sri Lanka for eliminating terrorism without their help,  and which is   now  seriously engaged attending to solve social and economic  problems that  had been left unattended  during the period of terrorism, and develop the country as a whole.

Take for instance the Prime Minister of Canada and his Foreign Minister, who ask the Commonwealth Heads of States to boycott the CHOGM for violation of Human Rights while the Canadian Aborigines  are accusing Stephen Harper’s Government for not granting basic human rights to the Aborigines who are still living in reserves under pitiable conditions in terms of  a racist Indian Act passed in 1876, which has still not been removed.

Then Great Britain and France which also berates  Sri Lanka for violation of Human rights, besides their unaccountable  civilian deaths in their wars in Afghanistan , Libya, Mali and so on, at home they are violating the rights of the Gypsy Community.  The European Human Rights Watch itself  had written as follows concerning this  inhuman  treatment of the Gypsy Community in UK, “…It is highly regrettable that it was not possible for the relevant local authority to find an acceptable solution, respectful of the rights of all parties involved.
“ Many of the 400 or so travellers evicted had returned to the area, either to the authorised part of the site, or parking their trailers and caravans along the roads leading to Dale Farm.
As a result, they are currently exposed to health and safety hazards. Basildon Council has indicated that there is a possibility of further action to remove these persons from the area, without offering culturally acceptable housing alternatives…….”

France is not with out smears of violation of human rights.  A human rights watch report recently stated, “…In the past week, French authorities have raided makeshift camps inhabited by Gypsies, also known as Roma, in Lille, Lyon and Marseille and evicted them. According to Human Rights Watch, the French government flew 240 Romanian Gypsies back to Romania on a flight last week and gave them as much as €300 ($369) each.

The raids "appear to be just the latest manifestation of France's notorious expulsion policy targeting Eastern European Roma," said Veronika Szente Goldston, a director at Human Rights Watch.”

Australia too has been accused of the violation of human rights of the Australian aborigines, by disowning them from their lands ".....dismantling of Aboriginal land rights so as to ensure free and unfettered access to Aboriginal lands by giant mining and pastoral companies. To justify this land grab, whole Aboriginal communities have been demonised as drunkards and paedophiles. This is a continuing story of human rights abuses within Australian borders."

In reality Sri Lanka has no ethnic problem though such a problem is being highlighted by interested political parties, and NGOs Like Pakiasothi Saravanamuttu who is in the pay of the notorious International Community groups working for regime change .  The Government of Sri Lanka is inviting all Communities whether minority or majority to bury their Communal differences and form a Nation of Sri Lankans  to  share the country and its laws.

But the TNA wants the Tamil Community treated differently from the other Communities, and the hierarchy of the Muslim Community wants to introduce the Sharia Law and  mark all food items on sale with a Halaal label.

The Sinhala Community is only asking that its historical  places should be respected , and wants the other communities to respect that which belongs to the Nation of Sri Lanka such as the Flag , National Anthem and Buddhism the religion with which Sri Lanka had been identified long before Islam and Christianity became religions.

TNA a pro terrorist political party does not trust the Government therefore it goes round the world demanding Sri Lanka to be accused for violation of human rights.  This is a breach of the Article 157 of the Constitution, but a FR case brought against the TNA for the breach of the relevant article in the Constitution was not heard by the Supreme court of Sri Lanka .

The Honourable judge Shirani Tilakewardane before whom the case against the TNA was to be heard, did not take the trouble even to verify whether there was in fact a breach of the Constitution, but asked the Plaintiff to withdraw the case requesting him to live in peace with all communities, but the Judge Shirani Tillekewardena did not extend the same advice to the TNA the defendant. Why ?

Honourable Minister of External Affairs G.L.Pieris  in his speech to the Parliament on the debate on the impeachment of the Chief Justice had said  that TNA, “…… had some meetings with the ( USA) Department of State and one of the Members of the TNA on his return to Sri Lanka made a statement to the media. Believe it or not, it really happened. He implied that the resolution that was moved against Sri Lanka was instigated by the TNA delegation. They spoke to the State Department and they persuaded the State Department to come up with that resolution against Sri Lanka. ”

Should we still continue to tolerate the TNA as a political party   in Sri Lanka ?  Is it not high time that they  are removed from Parliament as they despite their oath of allegiance to the Constitution of Sri Lanka continue to breach the Article 157 of the Constitution ?

That is how an ethnic problem has been  created for the consumption of the  International Community to come after Sri Lanka accusing it for violation of human rights.

Now the Impeachment Motion against the Chief Justice.

That is purely an internal affair of Sri Lanka, which involves the Constitution of Sri Lanka about which no other country has the right to tell us what to do. The Constitution is ours and we know best how to interpret it and act according to it.   Of course the matter was exceedingly exaggerated by various parties. Even the Editor of the  Island news paper with his hackneyed style of writing  has completely misunderstood the Impeachment procedure and writes editorial nonsense against the Government.

In the Editorial of the 8th December, 2012, the Island writes, “..To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Parliament rejected out of hand notices issued by the judiciary and decided to go ahead with the PSC process without caring a damn about a recent Supreme Court recommendation that the PSC proceedings be postponed until its ruling.  So, the CJ’s pull-out from the PSC proceedings must have warmed the cockles of the hearts of those opposed to the impeachment motion……”

The Supreme Court  had nothing to do with the Impeachment Motion which is a political matter that rests with  the Parliament.  If the clarification of an article of the Constitution is necessary it should be the Parliament that should request the Supreme Court to interpret it.  A third party cannot ask the Supreme Court for the  interpretation of the Constitution for the purposes of the Parliament, therefore the Supreme Court was wrong in giving an interpretation of the relevant Article of the Constitution to the Court of Appeal, a wrong interpretation at that.

That type of Judicial authority is not heard of. And our unconcerned International Community which does not hesitate to  put its nose where it is not necessary came all out to attack the Government of Sri Lanka listening to the naturally critical opposition political parties of Sri Lanka , the standby NGOs ready to blow the balloons, and those ever ready to attack the government of Sri Lanka without rhyme or reason .  It was not the first time, nor will  it be the last time, that  an Impeachment Motion had been or will be presented against a Chief Justice  either in the countries of the West or in Sri Lanka itself.

Nevertheless, that was made an occasion to single out Sri Lanka as the only country in the world  that violates the independence of the Judiciary and rule of law.  Even Pakiasothy Saravanamuttu had been instigated by interested NGOs to file an action against the newly appointed Chief Justice.  How far their hatred, jealousy and pretentious pomposity  take them ?

For Sri Lanka that chapter too is over but not for the International Community. The spokeswoman for the USA State Department Victoria Nauland too pulled up the Government of Sri Lanka for not respecting the Constitution of Sri Lanka in the Impeachment Motion.   What does she know about our constitution and who the “ he.. “ is she to tell us what we should do ?  Next time it will be the telephonist at the American Embassy in Sri Lanka who will ask the President of Sri Lanka what he should do and should not do !

America already has its own problems, such as its infamous gun culture, unsettled wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Palestine, and why then  has it got to bother about Sri Lanka which has managed its affairs very well without America.

It is not believable how the other countries try to impose their authority on Sri Lanka’s internal Affairs. Stephen Harper of Canada,  bluntly called on the Government of Sri Lanka to re-instate the Impeached Chief Justice, “We call on the government of Sri Lanka to respect the country's constitution and the independence of its judiciary and change course immediately," .  What a  crass way to address a Sovereign State ?

Then our former Coloniser the United Kingdom, who still seem to think Sri Lanka is one of its colonies stated , “The British Government is deeply concerned by the impeachment proceedings against Sri Lanka’s Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake. We share the concerns already expressed by many people in Sri Lanka over both the process and related reports of the intimidation of members of the Sri Lankan Bar Association. The motion to impeach the Chief Justice runs contrary to the clear rulings of Sri Lanka’s highest courts and the proceedings appear to contravene basic principles of fairness, due process and respect for the independence of the judiciaryand the Commonwealth Latimer House Principles.

“Together with our international partners, we call on the Sri Lankan Government to respect democratic principles and the right to peaceful protest and to ensure the continued safety of Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake”

Then the International Commissions of Jurists had sent a letter to the Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka stating, “ The irremovability of judges is a main pillar of judicial independence. Judges may be removed only in the most exceptional cases involving serious misconduct or incapacity. And in such exceptional circumstances, any removal process must comport with international standards of due process and fair trial, including the right to an independent review of the decision.”

They are reacting to the  situation most absurdly  making one doubt their ability as Jurists to evaluate a problem according to legal standards.

Then again  on the report of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission.

The USA passed a resolution at the UN Human Rights Commission, which other than being arrogant,  is the most “foolish” resolution to have come from a leading Nation like USA .  It is a shame if the President Barack Obama concedes to these absurdities of its State Department.

Speaking about the resolution passed against Sri Lanka at the UNHRC in Geneva the USA Delegation is reported  as having   “referred to the government's "lack of action to implement the recommendations" of that commission. It described the resolution it has moved as one "that encourages Sri Lanka to implement the recommendations of its own LLRC and to make concerted efforts at achieving the kind of meaningful accountability upon which lasting reconciliation efforts can be built.".

The resolution is about the report of the Commission of the LLRC the Government of Sri Lanka itself appointed, and therefore there is no reason for USA to tell how and when we should implement the recommendations, because the people concerned are Sri Lankans. The Government of Sri Lanka  treats  all Communities as the people of Sri Lanka, and in its implementation of the report of the LLRC it has to be sure that there is no discrimination against one community or another.  It is all about the people of Sri Lanka and the USA need not tell us what  we should do with our people.

The resolution was passed with 24 countries including India voting for , 15 countries against and 8 countries abstaining .“The USA and the other 23 members of the UNHRC who voted for that resolution in 2012 believe that the government of Sri Lanka needs to fulfil its commitments made to its own people,”

Does the USA love our people more than we the people of Sri Lanka ?

That resolution would not have  been passed if India did not stab Sri Lanka on its back staying silent as if they were with Sri Lanka  and voting at the last moment against Sri Lanka.  The result was that the eight countries which were on the fence waiting  for India  abstained voting when they saw that India had voted with USA.  Had India voted against the Resolution it would have been lost with 24 against it.  That is how India,  Sri Lanka's great relative and friend  double crossed, Sri Lanka.  India will do it again this March,  Soniya Gandhi seems to be preparing the ground for it.

What is strange with these criticisms of Sri Lanka and all out anger against Sri Lanka demonstrated by the USA and the International Community is that, they have not really helped  Sri Lanka in its single handed effort to eliminate terrorism with which it suffered for 30 years, nor after for the infrastructure and social and economic development.

They on the other hand hampered such developments by for instance the UE withdrawing the GSP grant for textile industry, and the USA,  which “….has refused to train several of its senior military officers, saying they were linked to credible allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity.”

But China and Russia on the other hand gave us much needed assistance both during Sri Lanka's  war against terrorism, and afterwards contributed  considerably for Sri Lanka’s development projects. They unlike USA and the International Community  respected Sri Lanka's sovereignty and never accused it for violation of human rights or war crimes.

Sri Lanka could not then and cannot now depend on USA and the International Community to help Sri Lanka’s development plans, but on the other hand they will continue to work for their Agenda of Regime Change and division of Sri Lanka.

What more are we going to sacrifice in the name of reconciliation ?

Ananda Samarakoon who composed the Sri Lanka National Anthem

Vasudeva Nanayakkara the Minister of National Languages and Social Integration must stop thinking  that he is a Minister in a Marxist Government. He is only a Marxist in a non-Marxis Government.  He continues with his idea of reconciliation taking away what had been National making them common popular items of no significance.   Vasudeva Nanayakkara now wants to mix Tamil and Sinhala verses in the National Anthem to make it a garbled version of the National Anthem that was written by Ananda Samarakoon in 1940 and recognised as the National Anthem of Sri Lanka in 1951.

 National Anthem of Sri Lanka

Vasudeva Nanaykkara is a Marxist and does not really know the  value of what is National. It will not be surprising  that if it is for the sake of reconciliation he may even propose part of the LTTE flag included in the already mutilated National flag of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka became a Government of the  people, by the people, and  for the people of Sri Lanka,  in reality,  in 1956 after Mr.S.W.R.D.Bandaranaike  formed his SLFP Government.

SWRD introduced Sinhala Only as the National language of Sri Lanka not to divide the country  or make the Majority dominate over the minorities.  He was an educated man and knew global politics.  He was not a nationalist as many would like to call him.

He knew that Western Nations were rich and influential because they had  built their nations around one National Anthem , one National flag and one National Language. He therefore wanted to unite all communities in Sri Lanka as one nation on that principle.

But it was the Tamil, political leaders like  G.G.Ponnambalam, Chelvanayagam and others who moved into set the Tamils against the Sinhala because they wanted to “rein” in the North as the leaders of the Tamil people.  The Communal Division was therefore created by these Tamil politicians, but never by SWRD Bandaranaike who had good intentions.

It was this extreme political sentiments aroused by these Tamil Political leaders that took greater divisive dimensions until the rise of terrorism in Sri Lanka. It was an exaggerated nationalist demand of those Tamil political leaders  to divide the country  and its people,  demanding equal rights for a 13 percent of a Tamil population against a 74 percent of a Sinhala population instead of  demanding political, social, and economic unity for the  whole of the people of Sri Lanka as one Nation of Sri Lankans.

However, after the elimination of terrorism the Government of the President Mahinda Rajapakse  made the greatest mistake of not immediately banning  the Tamil National Alliance, removing the 13 Amendment, and ban all political parties labelled as representing  a Community.

Therefore, today we have more problems with the TNA still representing the defunct terrorism, which keeps alive the Sinhala-Tamil division  hampering the development and the reconciliation of the Communities.

The Government has given in by introducing a three language policy, and starting more development projects in the North and East in order to draw the people from these district into the main political stream.  But still despite numerous efforts to bring about  an understanding  between the two main communities the rift is getting wider.

It is in this situation that Vasudeva Nanaykkara proposes the mutilation of the National Anthem, as another means for reconciliation.   It is time that the People stand against this move as it is the still remaining link  between the past and  the present .

Vasudeva Nanayakkara had said, “…… the national anthem with Sinhala and Tamil verses would be sung at the 65th Independence Day celebration on February 4th if the President approves the proposal. ”

This is what Vasudeva Nanayakkara wants and it is not what the people would like to have.  Therefore, we should appeal to the President to leave the National Anthem as it is, and not to give in to the LSSP Minister Nanayakkara, who wants to further muddle the already muddied situation in Sri Lanka.

If the proposal of Vasudeva Nanaykkara  is unfortunately  accepted the National Anthem will remain garbled and un-national as all  contributions that had been made in the recent past  in the name of reconciliation.

The TNA and the Tamil people following them will  never change their attitude and reconciliation  may remain a distant mirage with a garbled National Anthem becoming a comic song sung for  amusement  rather than as a “…… composition that evokes and eulogizes the history, traditions and struggles of its people.”, as a National Anthem should be.

Ananda Samarakoon - The composer of our national anthem

Who composed our national anthem? I am sure all you readers know the answer - Ananda Samarakoon. What do you know about him? We seldom hear or read about him now. He died 44 years ago, on April 5, 1962.
'Sri Lanka Maatha' was not composed as the national anthem. Samarakoon has put it on record that he composed it in 1940, when he was a teacher at Mahinda College, Galle, to instil patriotism - a love for one's country - in his students.

We had no national anthem to sing, on February 4, 1948, the day we got independence from British rule. The need for a national anthem was keenly felt; so, a competition was held to select one. Many choirs trained by reputed musicians competed. Ananda Samarakoon's song was selected. The Cabinet accepted 'Namo Namo Maatha' as our national anthem on November 22, 1951.
The opening words of the original song were 'Namo Namo Maatha'. Samarakoon knew nothing as he was away in India, holding art exhibitions, when all this took place.
Samarakoon was not only a master musician, singer and lyric writer (verses written to be sung are called lyrics), he was also an artist. His paintings, which were exhibited in North India and in Singapore and Malaysia during 1948-1951 had very favourable reviews in the leading papers of those towns like Straits Times and Deccan Herald.
He showed his inborn talents in the field of music when he was still a schoolboy. The story goes that he hated arithmetic. One day, the master caught him writing some lines of verse instead of doing his sums.
"What is this?" asked the angry master. "A song", replied the boy. "Then sing it for the class to hear", ordered the master, as a punishment. The boy sang the words to a tune he made up on the spot. The class was thrilled. The master's anger gave way to surprise and delight, but he didn't show it. The song was about the beautiful river-side he passed daily as he walked to and from school.
Ananda Samarakoon was born on January 13, 1911 in a small village, Liyanwela, near Watareka in the Padukka area. His parents, Samuel Samarakoon and Dominga Pieris were Christians. The son was christened George Wilfred. His full name was Egodahage George Wilfred Alwis Samarakoon.
He started schooling at the Wewala Government Sinhala school and his daily walk from Liyanwela to Wewala and back, was past the Weraha Ganga, which as it goes downstream, becomes the Bolgoda Oya.
Later, George Wilfred was admitted to Christian College, Kotte. His mother was then a teacher in a school at Nawala. Kotte and Nawala are on either side of the Diyawannawa. While at Christian College, he composed a song for the students of his mother's school, to sing at an inter-school competition organised by the Education Department.
The competition was held at Christian College and young Samarakoon must have been on top of the world, when it was announced that the students of the Nawala school won the first place. It was a patriotic song.
In 1929 he passed the ESLC examination, the equivalent of today's O-Level in the First Division, and in 1934, joined the staff of Christian College, as a teacher of art and music.
It was about this time that Rabindranath Tagore came to Sri Lanka with his troupe of dancers and musicians and staged ballets based on episodes in the Ramayana. This visit marked a turning point in our cultural scene. Many young men and a few women too, were so taken up with the singing and dancing, that they decided to join Shantinekathan, Tagore's School of Fine Arts in Bengal, some 100 odd miles from Calcutta (now Kolkott). Among them was George Wilfred.
He joined Shantinekathan in 1936 and studied art under the famous Bengali artist Nanda Lal Bose, and music and singing under Shanti Devi Gosh. He came back in 1937 before finishing his course, perhaps due to financial reasons, and started teaching again. It is not on record, but perhaps it was on his return, that George Wilfred became Ananda Samarakoon. In 1940, he was on the staff of Mahinda College.
The 1940s were the best years of Samarakoon's career, but he had already made his mark as singer, musician and lyric writer. He recorded his first song for the HMV company in 1939. Soon after, more songs were recorded. They were sung as duets with a young girl, Leelawathy. Samarakoon introduced a new type of song, with simple words, in keeping with the rural scenes painted in the lyrics, and they were set to charming tunes that appealed to the listeners. It was the Gramophone Era and these records sold fast and became very popular.
Leelawathy had an untimely death. His next partner was Swarna de Silva, a sister of the flautist Dunstan de Silva. It was with Swarna de Silva that Samarakoon first recorded 'Namo Namo Maatha' and other hits like 'Siri Saru Saara Kethey' and 'Poson Poho dina'.
When his son and only child, aged 5, died, Samarakoon was heart-broken, and became depressed. He left everything and went to India in 1948 and took to painting, to drown his sorrow.
Returning to his homeland in 1951, he started writing lyrics and singing. He was given a programme on the radio's school service. He produced a pageant of song and dance - Amaraneeya Lanka in 1957. But none of the songs of the 1950s could match the hits of the 40s. Because of his unsettled life and financial difficulties, he didn't have the peace of mind to compose songs like those of his heyday.
Then, in the 60s, he was hit so hard that he never recovered from the blow. Poets, pundits and Buddhist monks began blaming the misfortunes in the country on the national anthem, which they said was unlucky. Two Prime Ministers had untimely deaths; no Prime Minister had been able to complete his term of office.
This, the critics said, was the ill-effect of the unlucky 'gana' at the beginning of the national anthem. A 'gana' is the placing of the first three syllables - how the long and short syllables occur. The opening words of the anthem 'na-mo-na' short-long-short constituted an unlucky gana. With mounting criticism, the Government of the day was compelled to take action. Instead of changing the national anthem, the opening words were changed to 'Sri Lanka Maatha'.
Samarakoon was angry and frustrated. The change had been done without consulting him. A few days before his death, he wrote a letter to 'Timesman', a columnist on the Times newspaper.
He wrote, "The anthem has been beheaded. It has not only destroyed the song, but also destroyed the life of the composer. I am frustrated and broken-hearted. It is a misfortune to live in a country where such things happen to a humble composer. Death would be preferable".
On the morning of April 5, 1962, he was found dead on his bed. The coroner's verdict, "Death due to an overdose of sleeping pills".
