OMP Bill-duly passed and legally valid says the Speaker

OMP Bill is a reactionary piece of legislation that should not get into the legal system of Sri Lanka. OMP,  without getting into a legal and intellectual analysis could be stated as a dangerously bad  Bill as much as the  bad 13 Amendment or even worse. It is bad from the mere fact it comes from Prince Ra’ad Zeid Al_Hussain’s report adopted and included by the USA in its resolution against Sri Lanka at the UN HR Council in Geneva.

One cannot imagine how any intelligent man who has an iota of love to Sri Lanka, resurrected from the grip of  a tenacious ruthless terrorism after thirty years of suffering, would sponsor along with USA,  the most vicious resolution  like of which  no one had passed against any other country which had perpetrated most intolerable crimes against humanity.

We as Sri Lankans for generations will never  pardon the traitors Mangala Samaraweera and Ranil Wickramasinghe for making it possible to have allowed USA to get the UNHR Council in Geneva adopt such a devastating resolution against Sri Lanka which carried out a difficult war against all odds to eliminate terrorism and bring back peace and security to Sri Lanka.

It was the Armed Forces of Sri Lanka, without fearing the risks they were taking, that saved Sri Lanka their motherland from terrorism, for which heroism the Maithripala Sirisena- Ranil Wickramasinghe duo has allowed the USA prompted by the Tamil Diaspora to take our Armed Forces  before a tribunal and meet out punishments by enacting the OMP Bill in the Parliament.

They have trapped the personnel of the Armed forces by cutting all routs of escape as they could be arrested in any country outside Sri Lanka even if they are in those countries on a  visit officially or as tourists. But what are the offences that our soldiers have committed that deserve such intolerable treatment in the hands of foreign governments. Our Armed Forces  have committed no offence against their motherland Sri Lanka in eliminating terrorism. They had done their duty as soldiers in any armed force of any country would do to defend their country against its enemies.

Why has the USA and the UN Human Rights Council selected the Armed Forces of our country for punishment where as countries which really committed and commit criminal offences against civilians in other countries are left out ? It is  the Commissioner of the UN Human rights Commission that should be brought before a tribunal to answer why  he should not be punished for allowing USA and the UN bring a resolution incriminate the Armed forces of Sri Lanka which carried out an armed offensive against  a ruthless group of terrorists to eliminate them, in carrying out their duty of protecting their country and its people.

Some try to minimise the effect of the Bill for the setting up of an Office for Missing Persons in Sri Lanka.

Strangely the persons who are actively participating in encouraging  and writing hosannas  about the OMP Bill are Tamils.  The  well known anti Sinhala Tamil NGO Pakiasothy Saranawanamuttu the Executive Director of the  Centre for Policy Alternative  writes a guide to the  draft legislation for the establishment of the OMP.

The Bill as presented as a brief guide,  seems simple and innocent.  But even so if read carefully it shows where dangers  lie. However, the OMP Bill has been signed by the  Speaker of the House  Karu Jayasuriya making  the infamous bill to punish the personnel of our Armed Forces, law of the land.

On the face of it, without going into details,  it appears that the Yahapalanaya cronies with the bill on the OMP have opened a pandora’s box, because the Brief Guide on the Draft Legislation to the Establishment of the OMP begins by stating , “In 2015, the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted the consensus Resolution tilted ‘Promoting Reconciliation, Accountability and Human Rights in Sri Lanka’ which provided a framework for transitional justice in Sri Lanka, including the establishment of four specific mechanisms. The Office on Missing Persons (OMP) is to be the first.”

That means that there are more mechanisms envisaged,  which depend on the initial Bill on the project is accepted by the Parliament of Sri Lanka,  for other bills to be presented in the Parliament on the same issue..

In reality this resolution has no right to have been passed at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, let alone presenting it to be passed in the Parliament of Sri Lanka.  It happened because of the two cronies of the Yahapalanaya Government Ranil Wickramasinghe and Mangala Samaraweera.  They are really foolish men who  are gleeful, happy and acclaim victory for themselves for having been able to pass a bill which is virtually to hang the war heroes and open the doors for other nefarious interventions by the USA and the West.

The President of Sri Lanka who talks like a thug rather than an intelligent national leader seems to have no idea what Sri Lanka is in for with his “executive” Prime Minister taking the upper hand in the Administration of the country. We knew that appointing Ranil Wickramasinghe as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka portend danger and ill luck to Sri Lanka and its people.

We cannot understand why some say that the Prime Minister is a clean man, when all know that his hands are bloody with the tortures he inflicted on the Sinhala Buddhist youth in Batalanda and other torture camps he had set up, and he has also swindled the country having appointed Arjun Mahendran as the Governor of the Central Bank.

The FCID has not still investigated into what happened to the Billions of Rupees  involved in the Central Bank Bond Scam.  Where did that money go ? Who benefitted from it ? Was any part of that  defrauded money go  to Sirikotha ? Even the President want initiate action for an investigation as he is Prime Minister’s buddy. The President probably knows where that money went, but he is also a clean man !!

People have experience with Ranil Wickramasinghe who thinks that  any thing coming from the West are worthy of acceptance. The CFA prepared by Eric Solheim of Norway which he signed along with Prabhakaran is one such foolish act that cost the lives of thousands of soldiers and innocent people of all Communities, and lost a great foreign Minister the Late Laxman Kadigamar. It was thanks to a great man like Mahinda Rajapakse to have removed that disgusting  agreement, the hated CFA.

Sri Lanka has to be more careful in accepting proposals presented by the USA , the West and India. Because USA , the Western countries, or India do not want Sri Lanka develop as an independent Sovereign State. They want Sri Lanka  to be one of their subject states, as they do not admit  that Sri Lanka has intelligent men and women , who can administer the country,  or judges  intelligent and competent  enough to run an acceptable judicial system.

If the UNP had intelligent and competent people with foresight as Ministers, MPs, and Political advisors, they would not have introduced into our Constitution and legal System, the 13 Amendement or now the Bill for BMP.  There are worst things to follow-the ETCA, Bridge Connecting Tamil Nadu Sri Lanka, building a Sita Temple at Divurumpola in Sri Lanka by India for which Sri Lanka Government has already given its approval, leasing the oil Tanks in Trincomalee to India, giving six acres of prime land in Colombo to USA to put up buildings probably for a military base to collect intelligence covering China, Russia and other countries in the neighbourhood, and to lease the Tricomalee Port to USA.

These matters should be openly discussed in the Civil Society, before they are even placed before the Parliament where it should again be discussed before it becomes law. Though some Sri Lankans, institutions and  the media  are very critical of the former President Mahinda Rajapakse and give credit to him only for the elimination of terrorism,  as Mahinda Rajapakse  has done nothing else which had been beneficial to Sri Lanka.

These proposals made by foreign countries may look inoffensive, and the apparent dangers could be explained as nothing to be concerned,  but it is only when they are  being implemented that the complexities, surprises and dangers become evident, as it was with the CFA and the 13Amendment. It would then  be too late to change.

The Sunday 20th August Editorial of the Island states, “…..Mahinda Rajapaksa promised the masses a bright future of suba anagathayak. He, to his credit, eliminated terrorism, but his second term turned out to be a disaster. It was characterised by corruption, nepotism, abuse of power, violent suppression of political dissent and near lawlessness. Maithripala Sirisena vowed to make a difference and usher in yahapalanaya or good governance……..”.

But if looked objectively ex-President Mahinda Rajapakse  had not committed any of those enumerated “ offences”.  It appears that those accusations are  made in order not to earn the disapproval of the government in power.

These media which writes to please those in power , rather than fearlessly write  for the  benefit of the country, do not give credit to the former President for his most able and commendable service to Sri Lanka protecting it from the unfriendly foreign Countries.  Sri Lanka was protected and secured under the former President Mahinda Rajapakse.

It is  very good to have very cordial relations with all countries,  but not if it results in them trying to dictate terms,  pontificate on actions being taken, give unasked for advice on how to run the country, interfere with the internal affaires of the country  putting one community against the other and causing utter confusion and political disaster.  Mahinda Rajapakse knew this and he managed to keep them away from causing mischief in Sri Lanka.

Today Sri Lanka is quite different from what it was before the 8th January, 2015. The Present government has only shown its incompetence to rule Sri Lanka as an Independent Sovereign State. The new friends of the Yahapalanaya Governmenrt the USA and the West have made inroads into Sri Lanka Government’s internal affairs, by offering  to re-organise the Armed Forces, participate actively in the process of reconciliation, attending to the political affairs of  the North trying to separate the North from the rest of Sri Lanka, and even  participating in the writing of the  Constitution for Sri Lanka.

All the proposals the USA and the West and India make should be carefully evaluated before they are even presented to the Parliament. The Constitution of Sri Lanka is an important document that should be honoured and respected without desecrating it by introducing into it any legislation proposed by  any foreign government.

But the Sirisena and Ranil Wickramasinghe are not respectful of the countriy’s Constitution. They had  acted in breach of the Constitution of Sri Lanka from the day Maithripala Sirisena was elected President of Sri Lanka.

Today the 21st August, 2016, it has been announced that the offensive Bill  introducing OMP has become law. If the Speaker was independent he may have allowed further time to discuss the bill in the Parliament by bending the rules in favour of the opposition , but as he  seems to be under Prime Minister’s control he has become automatized to sign on orders.

The danger that Sri Lanka runs in passing this Bill on OMP has already been written by many learned persons, and heard discussions on it in TV, therefore, it is now for us to wait and see how the country with this impossible government would face the challenges.

Padayathra

Democracy permits any peaceful manifestation of the people against a government to show their dissatisfaction  of the way the country is being ruled. It is of course outside democracy for the people or groups of people or individuals to take up arms of any sort to manifest their dissatisfaction of the way they are being ruled by a government. That would be an armed rebellion or terrorism.

In America there are individuals who show their dissatisfaction on issues that personally affect them by taking a gun and kill children in schools, or innocent  people on the street. That is because in USA there are many people who are psychologically ill. Some of them do not take guns but make very impertinent statements that harm countries. If such statements are against the people of the country though in favour of the government in place those are  also a form of terrorism against the people who have no means of  making  the government  hear their suffering.

Someone that falls into that latter category is the present US Ambassador  Atul Keshup who made a very cheap and a derogatory remark. He had said:

“The United States is committed to the future of all of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka’s presidential election of January 2015 marked a historic shift in the country’s political direction and made possible a new relationship with the United States. Sri Lankan voters elected a new government built upon the pledge of good governance and national reconciliation and rejected an increasingly authoritarian rule by a government determined to erode democratic institutions”

May be His Excellency the US Ambassador is also psychologically ill.

However that is also a manifestation of ideas that fester the mind of an undiplomatic diplomat. These statements are also reasons for people to manifest their dissatisfaction against the  Yahapalanaya government which has allowed diplomats from USA interfere directly  into internal affairs of their country subjugating Sri Lanka to a foreign power.

Now what is Padayathra ? It is also a manifestation of the people against a ruling government. It may be peaceful but it can be noisy as it is a gathering of large number of people.

More precisely, Padayathra is a long walk lasting some times days organised to get all the people who have no other means to make their voices of anger heard by a stubborn , arrogant and an inefficient ruling class. It is quite  a democratic and a legitimate right of the people. Ordinary responsible governments of the people take these manifestations seriously put right the wrongs the are doing and make the government acceptable to the people or leave the government for some one else  to put to right the wrongs they have done or they are doing.
The recent Padayathra in Sri Lanka from the 28th to 31st July organised by the Joint Opposition of the parliament of Sri Lanka, was a great success, and it was surprising that Maithripala Sirisena –the President  and Ranil Wickramasinghe the Prime Minister and his UNP cohorts were misinterpreting the well organised, well attended and well behaved  manifestation of the people. To ridicule it and put it aside as unimportant is to insult the people and a stupid attempt to underestimate the power of the people that unseated the  popular government of Mahinda Rajapakse to put in place a government of the UNP, SLFP,TNA, JVP and SLMC, expecting them to do better.

What has happened is that the people who wanted a change for the better has got the worst possible government  Sri Lanka ever had, which continues to burden the people with taxes, causing a rise of  unemployment, suspending  development  projects started by President Mahinda Rajapakse, selling public enterprises, and sign  agreements with India which would further aggravate unemployment, increase the cost of living, increase poverty and destabilise the  economic, and social conditions of the people.

Instead of listening to the voice of the people raised in the Padayathra, Sirisena-Wickramasinghe-Chandrika sponsored Yahapalanaya government does not stop criticising the  Padayathra. The UNP and SLFP Ministers open their mouths to criticise with a view to diminish the importance of  the “people’s manifestation”. They critise the  manifestantion for having allowed the people to dance,  they say the number of participants were smaller than the numbers expected, they say that  manifestants hooted in front of the SLFP Head Quarters.  Chandrika has called the police to guard the SWRD Bandaranayake memorial to avoid it being desecrated. These were done purposely to show that the manifestation had no effect on them or their government.

The Government had ordered the police to stop the Padayathra at any cost, but due to the fact of its popularity with the participation of an un-expectedly  large number  of people the Courts from whom the police had demanded  a ruling to stop the manifestation passing through towns  refused to issue such orders.  The stupidity of the government was such they even refused to give the ground on which the Padayathra was to end, despite the fact that it had been reserved well in advance.

The Yahapalanaya Government with all their attempts to stop the Padayatra showed clearly to the people they are not democratic, they do not listen to the people, and the suffering of the people is not their concern and that they are bent on continuing their most disastrous government for five years whether the people like it or not.

Of course a manifestation of  the people  as it was with the Padayathra cannot be conducted silently, as it is a funeral procession. Shouting slogans, singing songs, certain misbehaviour at times, and wearing masks are normal pattern of a manifestation  meant to last for long period of time.

In France manifestations are worst. They wear masks representing the President and government Ministers. They burn effigies. They even dig the roads to unearth stones with which  to throw at the police.  They break shop windows and set fire to cars.  The farmers during manifestations drive their “cattle” on the streets, unload lorry loads of vegetables, fruits, potatoes, fish,  flour and grain, and spill  thousands of litters of milk on the road .

The Padayathra Organised by the Joint Opposition was a great show of strength of the people who behaved through out the manifestation remarkably well.
Another matter emphasised by the  opponents of the Padayathra was that a child cried out a political slogan. How can that be wrong, the parents who participated in the Padayathra may have come with their  parents and it is not using children for labour !  In manifestations in big capitals in Europe, fathers carry children carrying flags on their shoulders.  Mothers push their  prams with their babies in them

Unfortunately the Joint Opposition did not have the support of the faction of the SLFP which is with the President who is blind, deaf unable to see who is running the country he has only a big mouth with which to trash the  ex President. There is no national government as such , and the SLFP which was  formed by SWRD Bandaranayake as a political system against the capitalism of UNP have no right whatsoever now to form a pseudo national government with the very same UNP from which SWRD broke away.

The worst of it is  that,  it is the UNP which is the dominant party in the Yahapalanaya, the SLFP is a weak appendage hanging on to UNP, TNA,JVP, JHU and SLMC, merely to keep their political advantage of  having Ministerial positions.

Even the media is not taking a constructive role in informing the people of the dangers  Sri Lanka is running without an opposition to Ranil Wickramasinghe, Chandrika, and Mangala Samaraweera.  Little by little Sri Lanka is loosing its independence and sovereignty, being assimilated into USA and Western political system against China and Russia

It is the joint opposition that keeps informing the people of the dangerous political diversions  that are being taken by Yahapalanaya Government. Maithripala Sirisena as the President has lost his hold on the government run by Ranil Wickramasinghe .

Maithripala Sirisena has already become a ceremonial President sent to represent Sri Lanka in International Forums and meet political leaders  sympathetic to USA and Western political systems. Maithripala Sirisena as President has absolutely no power to stop where  this government is  heading under Ranil Wickramasinghe.

Only opposition to this government’s reactionary activities come from the Joint Opposition. The  Joint Oppostion is the only hope the country has to come out of the abyss into which Ranil, Chandrika, Mangala are pushing our motherland.

People like S.B.Dissanayake, Mahinda Samarasinghe, Sarath Amunugama are absolutely useless.  They were rejected by the people and thanks to Maithripala Sirisena they have not only been taken to the Parliament but made Ministers as well. So they are absolutely indebted to the President and do every thing possible to stay on in power along side Sirisena what ever may happen to the country.

S.B.Dissanayake who speaks as a saviour , asserting that he will not allow the sovereignty of Sri Lanka put in danger, says when asked why he does not support the Joint Opposition against eroding sovereignty of Sri Lanka say, “ SLFP is the party of the people. It has to remain  strong and united.  That would result in a secure undivided country. One thing we need to understand is that good diplomacy is not selling the country out.”  But the fact remains that these persons who are greedy for political positions  refuse to stand aside when the country is in danger.

The President, and UNP Ministers state in meetings, at press conferences and in TV programmes that Yahapalanaya is a unique experience in that the main political parties with opposite views have joined together to form a government to give their best to the progress and development of the country. But in this unique experience as they  like to say, the Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe’s UNP views dominate.

If in the Yahapalanaya government  SLFP section of the Government  accepts every action taken by the UNP section headed by the Prime Minister  there would be no one to say halt to any actions taken by  the Prime Minister which are not in the interest of the people. As Maithripala Sirisena has forbidden the SLFP Ministers to speak against the UNP , they obey the President for fear of loosing their Ministerial posts. Hence  the SLFP section of the Yahapalanaya government  does not oppose any action by  Ranil Wickramasinghe the Prime Minister whether they are in agreement of those actions or not.

Hence it is only the Joint Opposition the people have to look after their interests and speak against actions taken by the Yahapalanay government initiated by Ranil Wickramasinghe which are not in the interest of the country.  That was the reason why the people rocked in massive numbers around the Joint Opposition to manifest in the Padayathra  it organised.

The Ministers of Yahapalanaya talks about democracy, saying that the country did not have democracy under the ex President. But the democracy of the Yahapalanayaa has a different meaning. Their democracy has paved way to a dictatorship-even the speaker of the Parliament is not independent and acts according to the Agenda of the UNP Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe, who in turn acts according to the Agenda of the USA and the West.

Chandrika has no place in Sri Lanka as people have lost faith in her,  therefore she is building up her political stature by becoming a political agent of USA and the West. Ranil gets on well with Chandrika as Mahinda Rajapakse is their common enemy.

The Bill on Missing Persons Office is an absolutely unwanted piece of legislature for the well being of Sri Lanka.  It was enacted by Yahapalanaya to get closer to the USA and the West. We see from  the  USA and Western reaction to the passing of the bill on the Office for Missing persons that it is a legislation requested by the USA and the West to fulfil their agenda of making Sri Lanka a strategic political base for America against China and Russia,  and also for USA and the West to make good the promise they made to the Tamil Diaspora to allow them a  separate Tamil Eelam State separated from the South. A Kosovo in the Indian Ocean.

Intelligent people of Sri Lanka,  at least  all the categories of the Sinhala people, Buddhists , Christians, Catholics, and even free thinkers should join together to protect the rights of the Sinhala people.

The Padayathra has opened the eyes of the people , and frightened the Yahapalanaya government and its supporters like the JVP and the TNA, and even those pseudo intellectuals and the English educated class  became aware thanks to Padayathra that the ordinary mass of people are not ready to take things lying low. The power of the ordinary people is  greater than  their  attachment to USA and the Western tilted politics.

These pseudo patriots now know, because of the Padayathra that was able to get  hundreds of thousands of people to participate that there is a considerable   opposition to  Yahapalanaya Regime  amoung the people in Sri Lanka.

The UNP Ministers and Maithripala Sirisena himself , and Chandrika minimises the importance of the Padayathra.  Some count numbers  of people who attended the  Padayathra. People who watched it saw the massive numbers in attendance but  the UNP and  its supporters make themselves pathetically ridiculous making numbers small and the length of the manifestation reduced to a few meters.

The Yahapalanaya cronies refuse to accept that, whether the numbers who attended the Padayathra were small and the  length of it was short or not  the importance is that there is a growing opposition to the Yahapalanaya and that they should instead of criticising the Joint Opposition, change their policies to be acceptable by the people who are beginning to get tired of their heedless  steamroller political activities.

JVP

JVP does not know fundamentals of Marxist politics.  They started with a bloody revolution  with which it  achieved only the fear of the people for its criminal excesses and the peoples’ hatred. May be there is no single family in the south of Sri Lanka which did not have a relative of theirs murdered by the JVP, or a severed head of the head of a family stuck on a stick and planted in front of the house.

There were gruesome stories one of which  was that  the father was taken away by a JVP man  and  a message was sent to the family that he would come in the evening and gave a parcel of meat saying that he wanted it prepared for dinner. The mother prepared a meat curry and rice. She made the children eat and go to bed. The mother  waited for her husband, and as it was getting late she had her  dinner as well and went to sleep. The following morning when she opened the door her husband’s severed head stuck on a stick had been planted in front of the house.  The meat sent to the family through the  JVP messenger was her own husbands flesh.

The JVP has a cruel criminal history that the Sinhala people will not forget. It was worse for the Sinhala people, than it would have been for the Tamil people in the North under terrorism. People lived in fear. When the JVPers came in the night, people blew out the lamps.  They dare not open a door or a window, unless the JVP criminals surrounding the house asked them to pass their identity cards, money, gold or silver through the windows.

That is what the JVP had been and those are the indelible memories  left behind in the minds of the people. Now they have different rhetoric condemning Mahinda Rajapakse  and ever since the Yahapalanaya set their dirty paws in the political cake JVP did not stop their march to the office of the Commissioner for Bribery and Corruption with files accusing the Ministers  of the Mahinda Rajapakse government.   It is not the SLFP or the Mahinda Rajapakse Regime that was responsible for political crimes, but JVP and UNP as much as the JVP,for  UNP too has its criminal past. The killing and burning Sinhala youth on heaps of tyres, and torturing and killing youth in many torture camps such as in Batalanda, by Ranil Wickramasinghe under President R.Premadasa.

JVP knows that even though there are crowds at their meetings, the people  are reticent in giving them political power.  The tendency will never change as the people are distancing themselves from JVP politics. Marxists know that they cannot depend on Parliamentary elections to come to power therefore if a revolution of the proletariats is not possible they should make use of the popular political party to ride on it to gain political recognition. The JVP knows it by experience as it was when it contested as a partner of the UPFA coalition that it  won 39 parliamentary seats.  But since they left that coalition and contested on their own or with  other political parties they  failed to have a respectable number of seats. At the last General election with all the pretentious rhetoric they got only 6 parliamentary seats.

The present JVP political strategy was explained by Lalakantha  a  senior member of JVP at a television  programme in which he was interviewed.  He says JVP has no trust in any of the political parties. If the JVP is to support UNP it would indirectly benefit the former President Mahinda Rajapakse, and if the JVP were to support Mahinda Rajapakse it would be to the benefit of  the UNP. Therefore, the JVP is opposed to both  which would  enable them to prepare the ground for a third political force- which would of course be  the JVP.

We saw this strategy when JVP joined forces with the capitalist UNP, the ambitious JHU, racist TNA, and the outsider who remains on the fringe to take what they can without any effort- the SLMC. Here the effort of the JVP was to defeat the Presidential candidate Mahinda Rajapakse. Since  the defeat of Mahinda Rajapakse, there is  a UNP-SLFP government supported by the -TNA-JVP-JHU-SLMC lead by Maithripala Sirisena as the President.

After the Presidential elections JVP was taking all measures possible to bring Mahinda Rajapakse and his  family to courts accused of various malpractices to prove to the people  Mahinda Rajapakse was not a patriotic people friendly politician but a rogue  who was trying to accumulate wealth and allow his family members and friends to do so with various projects he initiated and carried out leaving behind a huge debt.

Wasantha Samarasinghe of the JVP is its voice against corruption, and we saw him in that role with many files accusing  Rajapakse’s and his collaborators in the previous government under his arm going to the  Office of the Commissioner for Bribery and Corruption making statements to media with great assurance that  JVP has enough material to lock up the Rajapakses in prison. They have still failed because Rajapakses did not make money and they did a job of work for the betterment of Sri Lanka. Their work is there to be seen, a witness to posterity.

Wasantha Samarasinghe and JVP accused Rajapakses as thieves and got others of the UNP,and JHU to do so, passed judgment, and hanged them before even the courts and judges found an iota of evidence to find them guilty of any thin that had been accused of,  and they are still looking for  ways and means to  prove the Rajapakses are thieves. All that is because the JVP and the whole of Yahapalanay know that Mahinda Rajapakse is popular and more they accuse him more he becomes popular.

JVP is spending sleepless nights thinking of ways to remove Rajapakses from the political scene so that the stage will be free for their pranks, and fool  the people to make them give their votes to form a JVP government. JVP knows that  UNP is in business because of the Tamils, the Muslims and the Catholics. But JVP is putting all their cards on Marxist theories to get a majority in Parliament.

In a Parliamentary democracy and in a country like Sri Lanka Marxist theories do not give desired results. The JVP’s only means to have a respectable number of  representatives in the parliament is to ride on a popular political party. That too should be that of Mahinda Rajapakse and the Joint Opposition. On its own or being in a  coalition with UNP, JVP will never get more than 6 seats, which is the maximum they could hope for, even if they manage to  “lock up” all Rajapakses

In a recent Derana TV programme where the subject of discussion was on “left wing politics” the participants were  Nimal Devasiri, Vasudeva Nanayakkara,Tissa Vitaharana, Lal Kantha of JVP and Pubudu Jagoda. There was lot of Marxist theories  discussed to define Imperialism in modern left wing politics, but unfortunately they were far away from the political context in which Sri Lanka finds itself today.

Vasudeva Nanayakkara and Tissa Vitharan pointed out to them that while they theorise left politics as it should apply to the  Sri Lankan situation, the sovereignty of  Sri Lanka is being usurped by the USA, even proposing its intervention in writing  a new Constitution to Sri Lanka, setting up a Naval base in Trincomalee, and acquiring six acres of prime land in Colombo to put up buildings by an American construction firm, probably to set up a military base to keep the Chinese built port city under constant survey.

The Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe is the most powerful man in Sri Lanka. The  President Maithripala Sirisena only makes speeches leading a quiet life in his President’s House in fear of Ranil Wickramasinghe to whom he is indebted for his position as thr President of Sri Lanka.

President Maithripala Sirisena wanted Arjun Mahendran removed from the Central Bank and appointed a Governor of his choice. Maithripala Sirisena would have been happy as after all he had his own way despite  his Prime Minister. But Ranil Wickramasinghe appointed Arjun Mahendran as his adviser taking him every where he goes.

The USA has still not given a cent to Sri Lanka for development work, but spends lot of money to make Sri Lanka a strategic American base from which to keep China and Russia in check.  The President Maithripala Sirisena has even agreed to buy fighter planes, despite Sri Lanka’s  dwindling finances and debt (which Yahapalanaya says is the main reason for the proposed Value Added Tax) , apparently to satisfy the demands of America through its Ambassador.

But JVP continues to call Rajapakses thieves, and that  UNP is mismanaging the country and demands that they be given the country to rule. The people are already suffering under Yahapalanaya Government and see no light at the end of  the darkest tunnel into which Maithripala Sirisena and Ranil Wickramasinghe have dragged the country.

The people of Sri Lanka in this predicament will never turn to JVP, but certainly to Mahinda Rajapakse and the Joint Opposition to find a safe way out.
