Why should the BBC reporter raise his eye brows over increasing the size of the Sri Lanka Armed Forces ?

BBC does not seem to have changed its perverted reporting with the aim to divide people and create dissention among them. Take any of the articles on Sri Lanka in the BBC News website, and there is none without reference to the “Sinhala Majority” , or “ Sinhala Buddhist Governments “, followed by a quote from an interview or a statements uttered by a racist like Mano Ganeshan, who still remains a terrorist in mind.

The minority majority difference was introduced by the British colonialists, and continues to be used incessantly by the BBC the British pro terrorist mouthpiece. The Sinhala people were never racists like the British. The Sinhala though certain foreign popularity seeking journalists call supremacists had never been so . The Sinhala people did not wait for any one to join them when it came to defending their motherland. They were prepared to give their lives to keep the country secure and safe for all who populate it to live happily.

They the Sinhala Buddhists had been doing that in the past to protect the country from the invaders from the neighbouring India, the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British. When Sri Lanka was occupied by the Chola King Elara, who had set up a kingdom in Anuradhapura, the Young Sinhala Buddhist Prince Dutugamuna waged a war to liberate the country from the Chola invaders and united the Country enabling all people of every descent to live happily in the Island.

Do the all knowing clever journalists of the BBC and the foreign media who seek out Mano Ganeshan, Kumar Rupasinghe, Kumar David and Jayadeva Uyangoda as liberal Lankan intellectuals to quote from, speak of the sacrifice the Sinhala Buddhists had made in the past and continue to make now to keep Sri Lanka a unitary Island for it to be the Island home of every one who lives in it ?

No they do not, for their language is not a language of pacification, a language to bring the divided communities together. They use their pen to create division, hatred and hostility, which is their freedom of the press.

It was very rarely that a white man spoke against terrorism in Sri Lanka and called the people to unite to defeat terrorism. On the other hand many were those who hoped a divided Sri Lanka . A Sri Lanka divided between the Sinhala Buddhists and Tamils. Its time that we stop “scratching our fore heads “with broad smiles to please the whites where ever they come from, and stand up as free people strong and proud as we are.

Poverty or underdevelopment is nothing to be ashamed of. We may go with our stomachs empty, but we should still walk with our heads held high. IMF wants to keep developing countries poor, standing on their knees waiting for it to draw up plans and lay down conditions to give loans. IMF is not there to help countries to develop but to keep them poor coming to them begging bowls in hand to collect the crumbs falling from their rich tables.

This is the rich man’s world, that is trying to teach us lessons. This is the rich man’s world that speaks of ethnic difference and concentration camps. The BBC bemoans the Sri Lanka Governments plans to increase the size of the army by 50%. It is for the Government of Sri Lanka to decide what is good for her.

A strong Armed Force is necessary for Sri Lanka so that those unpleasant experiences of the past will not be repeated in the future. It is necessary for the security of the country and protect our territories. Our Armed Forces, unlike those of the West, are not to fight wars in Foreign Lands, they are to safeguard our country and protect our people.

In France there was a compulsory military service for all youth. The army provided them training in different activities and when they came out of the military service they were prepared for life, to take up an employment and live as disciplined citizens. And if their was a war France had trained men and women to take up arms. Since compulsory military service had been abandoned French youth seem to have problems of employment and are less prepared to face the cruelty of unemployment.

It is normal that after a bitter period of an unexpected terrorism that the Government of Sri Lanka decides to increase its military personnel , and leave a military presence in areas susceptible for future insurgencies.

It is not surprising that the BBC reporter tries to give it a racial twist by stating, “ Boosted by that pride, which is strongest in Sri Lanka's Sinhalese majority population, the forces are recruiting”. What a crafty lot are these Western journalists who kindle fires of racial animosity, where it does not exist ?

Why harp on ethnic problem in Sri Lanka when it is worse in UK ,France and other European Countries as well as in America ? The problems of racism in the West are worse than what they try to make out of our problems here. Diplomas and Academic qualifications are no guarantee of employment if one is of the wrong colour or a different racial origin. It is so even for the children of mixed marriages. It will not be possible to get an employment in keeping with one’s qualification if one is different from them.

After the second world war the NATO Forces were stationed in France, and subsequently when France withdrew from NATO, they moved to Brussels in Belgium. In Cyprus a large area is occupied by English Armed Forces . American Armed Forces have their bases in Yokosuka, Okinawa and Misawa in Japan.

So why not we in Sri Lanka, station our armed forces in our own country where ever we want for the protection of our people.

In 1983 we had only a decorative Armed Force when the terrorists sounded the death knell for Sri Lankan Government by the massacre of 13 Sinhala Police men, which resulted in the backlash in the South by elements who could not control their anger.

The Black July as the Tamil expatriates call it, was the making of the terrorists. That sort of backlash never happened thereafter, despite many a provocation by the terrorists. Therefore, the Sinhala people cannot continued to be despised and be called Sinhala supremacists by the Tamil racist elements like Mano Ganeshans , Pararajasinghams, and the Tamil expatriate community abroad.

The Sinhala people react to injustice but do not harbour grudge. They have no grudge what so ever against the Tamil people because the terrorists came from the Tamil Community. The Armed Forces of the Sinhala Buddhist hegemonic government as Mano Ganeshan- the Tamil racist calls it, never carried out military operations against the Tamil people and that need not be repeated, even if it is the monotonous undertone of the foreign media, human rights watch, and the Amnesty International when they write their reports on Sri Lanka.

It is time that the BBC begins to make objective reporting to create an atmosphere of peace and good will.

A home grown Solution for Unity, or implement 13 Amendment to perpetrate ethnic difference for disunity.

The President of Sri Lanka wants home made solutions to build our nation afresh from the ashes of the past. In his most significant speech to the Parliament after elimination of terrorism from the country, he said that our Nation has no minorities.

In the light of those assertions why is it necessary to implement the 13 Amendment to the Constitution which had been imposed on us at a time Sri Lanka was both militarily and politically weak. The government had the courage to withdraw from the CFA which had no legal value as it was not formulated by the government at the time and discussed and adopted as a legal document by the Parliament of Sri Lanka.

If the Government had not withdrawn from the CFA, we would have more interference by the pro-terrorist foreign elements and the elimination of terrorism would have been delayed or ended in failure.

The 13 Amendment was perhaps adopted by a Parliament where the opposition had no effective voice, when for the First time we had an all powerful executive President. It may perhaps be appropriate now to place the 13 Amendment before the Parliament to bring in Amendments to it to make it a more acceptable document in the context of the present situation, or rescind it altogether.. But, the implementation of the 13 Amendment as it is, is not appropriate as it may lead to political instability in the future.

During the Military Operations against terrorism the Military hierarchy often repeated that the terrorism should be eliminated without leaving it for the future generation. In the same way the 13 Amendment should not be implemented to avoid passing on to a generation after political dissention and attempts to set up separatist Regional Parliaments.

In seeking home made solutions for the development of Sri Lanka as it was asserted by the President, implementation of the 13 Amendment which was prepared in India, and adopted hastily in the Parliament, without giving sufficient time to discuss it leisurely and bring in amendments to it, would put into question the President’s assertion of home made solutions to political problems in Sri Lanka.

The major impediments for ethnic unity such as the language, education, employment opportunities , and legislative parity in the Island are being attended to by the government. Therefore the adoption of the 13 Amendment which would probably cause future political instability in the country is meaningless. The elimination of terrorism necessitates unity of the different Communities. The centralised control of Regions as it now exists is of utmost importance to avoid ever again a situation that we have stopped after 30 years of suffering , thousands of lives lost, at an immense financial cost.

Despite the storms of terrorism we had weathered with so much of loss of life and material the political leaders representing Tamil Community do not seem to be ready to speak the language of unity. The Sinhala political leadership has extended its arms of friendship , burying even the vestiges of often mentioned supremacism of the majority, to accept all communities under the umbrella of a united Sri Lankan Nation. But yet, as always, it is the Tamil political leaders who dilly dally not wanting to finish with their Tamilness to broach the difference and keep the communities apart, perhaps still hoping for a Tamil Homeland.

Anandasangaree the UNESCO laureate , the winner of the Madanjeet Singh prize for the promotion of tolerance and non violence, prefers to stand apart as the representative of the Tamils, critical of the IDP camps and the government.

It would have been more in keeping with Anadasangaree’s crowning achievement of international recognition of his tolerance, if he had shown an example to the Tamil people of Sri Lanka, by making a gesture of unity with the Sinhala and the Muslims people to build a single united Nation of Sri Lankans,

In that respect what an appropriate gesture it would have been, if he joined a non-communal political party like the UPFA or UNP to contest the PC elections in Jaffna.

Douglas Devananda, who had been a Minister of the present government, has also missed an opportunity to seal the bond of unity between the Tamil Community on one side, and the Sinhala and Muslim Communities on the other , by deciding to contest the Jaffna PC Elections independently.

It is only Karuna Amman or Muralitharan who joined the SLFP. He showed his sincere attachment for the call of unity . This would have been an occasion for Anandasangaree as a elderly liberal minded Tamil politician to give an example to all Tamils to bury their ethnic differences to come together as Sri Lankans. But he seems to be still dreaming of a separate Tamil Region with its own Parliament under a Federal Constitution.

India at the time of putting forward the 13 Amendment, to help Sri Lanka to end terrorism by sending IPK Force would have had the ulterior motive of helping Prabhakaran to set up a Tamil Homeland. But Prabhakaran who was bright in thinking out plans to kill, maim and think of strategies to defeat the Government Forces was not very intelligent in other matters. A Tamil Homeland as a political end may have been the furthest from his imagination.

He was more an egoist who thought of himself living the life of a Thalaivar with lots of slaves paying obeisance to him and carrying out his orders, a King of sorts. If not, instead of fighting with the IPKForce he could have worked with them to set up the Tamil Homeland.

In demanding the implementation of the 13 Amendment India was contributing to keep the two Communities the Tamils and the Sinhala Majority apart. India probably wanted the perpetuation of the Tamil and Sinhala difference. Therefore the 13 Amendment would have been proposed as a stepping stone to the Tamil Homeland concept. That was India’s gift to Prabhakaran. But, Prbhakaran the fool he was, without any political acumen did not understand the possibility that had been placed before him by India.

What Sri Lanka wants now is not to continue this Sinhala Tamil difference. But to bring the two Communities together and along with the other Communities form a united Sri Lanka. For that the 13 Amendment as worked out by India, will certainly be an obstacle.

The implementation of the 13 Amendment will keep North and East separated from the rest of the Country. Further more the 13 Amendment requires the North and East merged into one region, not demerged as two provinces. Therefore, the Implementation of the 13 Amendment will bring up the question of merging the two regions into one.

In any further political developments the Tamil Expatriates who had defended the cause of the terrorists should be kept out, unless they give up their support for the “dead cause” of separatism.

Taking all these into consideration the Government should re-examine the wisdom of implementing the 13 Amendment.

The Criminal Investigations of the Sri Lanka Police Force are hopelessly inadequate.

The Sri Lanka Armed Forces of the Infantry, Air and Naval Forces have done an exceptionally commendable service to the Nation in the successful elimination of terrorism from Sri Lanka

But can we say the same of the Sri Lanka Police Force ?

There are lot of murders, assassinations , assaults ,kidnapping of children and their murder, and kidnapping and assault of journalists that have not bee accounted for, the criminals are still free to continue their ferocious activities.

This reflects badly on the Sri Lanka Police Force. This inactivity or mishandling of the investigations of criminal offences puts the government into embarrassment. The interfering pseudo humanitarians of the West awaiting to accuse Sri Lanka for what ever shortcoming, find material to discredit the government in the inefficient handling of criminal offences by the Sri Lanka Police Force.

It is time that the Government puts in place a person like the Defence Secretary to accelerate criminal investigations more efficiently to find the criminals responsible for still unsolved assassinations and kidnappings.

Three children had been kidnappedrecently and their bodies found . Only action with regard to these kidnappings of children and their murders, had been the shooting of the suspects. Shooting of a suspect is not the same as taking them into custody and being interrogated so that reasons for these acts and whether they were being monitored by others could be found out.

Late Lasantha Wickramaratne’s assassination could have been solved if the police was more vigilant and quick in taking action. They could have taken witnesses for interrogation and checked on the type of motor cycles used, but there seems to be so much of dilly dallying that the public begins wonder whether the Police Criminal Investigation Department is really doing its job.

It is the same with the infamous white van abductions, the public is not kept informed of the police investigations and where they are with regard to their inquiries. This too shows the inability of the police to make extensive investigations and arrest the criminals. There is an apparent lethargy of the Police Criminal investigation Forces, that has got to be immediately attended to by the higher authorities.

The public has still to be informed as to where the police investigations are with regard to the assassination of Late Mr.Lakshman Kadirgamar. And it is the same with regard to other Criminal Offences. No Police investigations of any of the assassinations seem to have been completed and the perpetrators taken to custody.

The Police Force has to be reorganised providing it with modern investigation equipment and the personnel trained to carryout successful criminal investigations. As it is the performance of the Sri Lanka Police Force with regard to criminal investigations is much to be expected.
